Analysis
EXAM ANALYSIS
The CBSE Class 10 English Language and Literature Board Examination 2026 was conducted on 21 February 2026 (Saturday), from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The examination was held in offline, pen-and-paper mode. The theory paper carried 80 marks, while 20 marks were allotted for internal assessment, making the total 100 marks.
Overall Exam Format
The CBSE Class 10 English Language and Literature paper (Subject Code 184) assessed students' reading comprehension, grammar, creative writing skills, and understanding of prescribed literature. The theory examination was divided into three sections: Reading Skills, Grammar and Creative Writing Skills, and Literature Textbook and Supplementary Reading Text. Students were required to demonstrate comprehension, language accuracy, writing skills, and an understanding of literary themes and characters.
Sections and Marks Distribution
Section A: Reading Skills — 20 Marks
This section focused on unseen passages and tested students' ability to understand the central idea, identify important details, interpret information, understand vocabulary in context, and answer inference-based questions. Students needed to read carefully and manage their time effectively.
Section B: Grammar and Creative Writing Skills — 20 Marks
This section assessed grammar and writing skills. It included prescribed grammar topics, formal letter writing, and analytical paragraph writing. Students needed to apply grammatical rules correctly, organise their ideas logically, and follow the required writing formats.
Section C: Literature Textbook and Supplementary Reading Text — 40 Marks
This section covered the prescribed prose, poetry, and supplementary reader. Questions assessed students' understanding of characters, themes, important events, literary extracts, and the messages conveyed by the texts. Short-answer and long-answer questions required clear explanations supported by an understanding of the prescribed chapters and poems.
Topics Covered and Their Weightage
The Reading Skills section carried 20 marks and focused on comprehension, vocabulary, inference, and interpretation of unseen passages. The Grammar and Creative Writing Skills section carried 20 marks and covered prescribed grammar topics, formal letter writing, and analytical paragraph writing. The Literature section carried 40 marks and assessed the prescribed prose, poetry, and supplementary reader. The exact chapter-wise weightage and question-wise marks for Paper A should be confirmed from the original question paper.
Difficulty Level of the Paper
The overall difficulty of the CBSE Class 10 English examination was reported as easy to moderate to moderate, although individual experiences varied. Reading comprehension required careful reading and time management, while grammar questions tested the application of language rules. The writing section required clear organisation and correct formats. The literature section tested students' understanding of chapters, poems, characters, themes, and textual extracts. These are general observations and should not be treated as a verified difficulty assessment of every question in Paper A.
Important Observations for Students
Students preparing for upcoming CBSE Class 10 English examinations should focus on understanding the prescribed NCERT textbooks rather than memorising answers. Regular practice of unseen passages can improve comprehension and accuracy. Grammar rules should be revised with the help of practice questions, while formal letters and analytical paragraphs should be prepared according to the prescribed formats.
Students should also practise short-answer and long-answer literature questions, revise important themes and character descriptions, and solve previous-year question papers within the allotted three hours. Careful reading of question instructions, appropriate answer length, correct grammar, and effective time management can help improve performance.
Preparation Tips for Future Examinations
Reading Skills: Practise unseen passages and inference-based questions regularly.
Grammar: Revise prescribed grammar topics and solve application-based exercises.
Writing Skills: Practise formal letters and analytical paragraphs using the correct format.
Literature: Revise all prescribed chapters, poems, characters, themes, and important extracts.
Time Management: Allocate time to each section and reserve a few minutes for revision.
Answer Presentation: Write clear, relevant answers and follow the word limits and instructions given in the question paper.
Note: This is a general analysis based on the prescribed examination structure and reported student feedback. An exact Paper A analysis, including individual questions, chapter-wise marks, and section-wise difficulty, requires the actual question paper.
Study Tips
STUDY TIPS
Start by understanding the syllabus, exam pattern, marking scheme, and important topics, then create a realistic study schedule based on the available time. Focus on understanding concepts rather than only memorising answers, and use the prescribed textbook as the primary study resource. Prepare concise notes, revise regularly, practise previous-year/sample papers, and solve questions within the given time limit. Identify weak areas through regular self-assessment and give them additional practice. Maintain consistency, take short breaks, get adequate sleep, and avoid leaving the entire syllabus for the final few weeks. In the final stage, focus mainly on revision, practice papers, important concepts, formulas, diagrams, definitions, and commonly tested areas.
3 MONTHS STUDY PLAN
Month 1: Complete the syllabus systematically, understand the basic concepts, and prepare short revision notes for each chapter or topic. Give extra attention to difficult and high-priority areas.
Month 2: Complete the remaining syllabus and begin intensive revision. Practise textbook questions, previous-year questions, sample papers, numerical problems, diagrams, and application-based questions according to the subject.
Month 3: Focus primarily on revision and examination practice. Take full-length mock tests under actual exam conditions, analyse mistakes, revise weak topics, and repeatedly review important concepts, formulas, definitions, diagrams, and key facts. Keep the final days for light revision and avoid starting major new topics.
6 MONTHS STUDY PLAN
Months 1–2: Understand the complete syllabus and build strong conceptual foundations. Study each subject regularly and complete the easier and core topics first while maintaining concise notes.
Months 3–4: Complete the remaining syllabus and strengthen difficult topics. Start practising chapter-wise questions, previous-year questions, numerical problems, diagrams, and application-based questions. Revise completed chapters regularly.
Month 5: Begin full-syllabus revision and increase examination practice. Solve sample and previous-year papers within the prescribed time, analyse errors, and focus on topics where performance is weak.
Month 6: Use the final month mainly for revision and mock tests. Follow a subject-wise revision cycle, practise under exam conditions, correct recurring mistakes, and revise important formulas, definitions, diagrams, concepts, and facts. Maintain a consistent routine, adequate sleep, and a calm approach during the final days.
