The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students who studied Basic Mathematics (Code 241) in Class 10 will continue to be eligible to opt for Mathematics (Code 041) in Class 11, starting from the 2025–26 academic session. This relaxation, which was initially introduced due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, will remain in effect going forward.
As per the board’s official statement, this flexibility is granted only if the school authorities are satisfied with the student's aptitude and capability to handle the standard mathematics curriculum at the senior secondary level.
“Students who have opted for Mathematics Basic (241) are permitted to take Mathematics (041) in Class XI, subject to the school’s assessment of their potential to pursue the subject,” CBSE stated.
Background On Dual-Level Mathematics
CBSE implemented two levels of mathematics for Class 10 starting from the March 2020 board examinations:
Mathematics Standard (041) – for students planning to continue mathematics at higher levels.
Mathematics Basic (241) – for those not intending to pursue mathematics in senior secondary or beyond.
Under normal rules, students taking Basic Mathematics were only eligible for Applied Mathematics in Class 11. However, the board introduced a relaxation during the pandemic that allowed such students to opt for Standard Mathematics, which is now being extended beyond 2025–26.
Important Guidelines For Schools And Students
Schools must evaluate a student’s academic readiness before permitting them to take Mathematics (041).
Once the subject selection is finalized and submitted through the List of Candidates (LOC), no changes will be permitted later.
CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to communicate this update to students and parents to ensure informed subject choices.
