UPSC IES Prelims Examination 2024: Latest Update
The UPSC IES Prelims exam will be held on 18th February 2024 in two shifts. The UPSC IES Notification 2024 had been released on 6th September 2023. A total of 167 vacancies have been announced for recruitment through the UPSC ESE 2024. The individuals who clear the preliminary examination will be eligible to appear for the Main Examination to be organized on 23 June 2024.
INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICES (IES) EXAM
The standard of paper in General Studies and Engineering Aptitude (Preliminary Stage I Examination) will be such as may be expected of an Engineering/Science Graduate. The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be that of an Engineering Degree Examination of an Indian University. There will be no practical examination in any of the subjects.

UPSC IES PRELIMS MODE OF EXAMINATION
The Preliminary examination for Indian Engineering Services is held as Offline Pen & Paper Based Examination.
UPSC IES PRELIMS MEDIUM OF EXAMINATION
Conventional papers must be answered in English. The question paper will be set in English only.
UPSC IES PRELIMS MARKING SCHEME
There will be a penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the objective type question papers.
1. There are four alternatives for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (1/3rd) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as a penalty.
2. If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happens to be correct and there will be the same penalty as above for that question.
3. If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.
4. Candidates should note that if any irrelevant matter/signages/marks etc. are found written in the answer script(s), which would not be related to any question/answer and/or would be having the potential to disclose the candidate’s identity, the Commission will impose a penalty of deduction of marks from the total marks otherwise accruing to the candidate or will not evaluate the said script(s) on this account.

UPSC IES Prelims Examination 2024: Latest Update
The UPSC IES Prelims exam will be held on 18th February 2024 in two shifts. The UPSC IES Notification 2024 had been released on 6th September 2023. A total of 167 vacancies have been announced for recruitment through the UPSC ESE 2024. The individuals who clear the preliminary examination will be eligible to appear for the Main Examination to be organized on 23 June 2024.
INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICES (IES) Eligibility
Candidates willing to apply for Indian Engineering Services (IES) Examination are required to fulfil certain conditions to be eligible for it. The candidate who does not satisfy the Eligibility criteria like Age, Minimum educational qualification etc., their candidature shall be rejected by the authorities. The criteria for eligibility Indian Engineering Services (IES) are decided by the conduction body itself. The candidate’s eligibility for Indian Engineering Services (IES) Examination is based on the fulfilment of the following conditions:-
1. Nationality
2. Age Limit & Relaxations
3. Educational Qualifications
4. Medical Examination
5. Physical Standards
INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICES (IES) NATIONALITY
A candidate must be either:-
1. a citizen of India; or
2. a subject of Nepal; or
3. a subject of Bhutan; or
4. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India; or
5. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (2), (3), (4) & (5) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issues by the Government of India.
Note :- A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination, but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.
INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICES (IES) AGE LIMIT & RELAXATIONS
1. A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years .
2. The upper age limit of 30 Years will be relaxable upto 35 years in the case of Government servants of the following categories, if they are employed in a Department/ Office under the control of any of the authorities mentioned in the Column 1 below and apply for admission to the examination for all or any of the Service(s)/ Post(s) mentioned in the Column 2, for which they are otherwise eligible.
3. A candidate who holds substantively a permanent post in the particular Department/ Office concerned. This relaxation will not be admissible to the probationer appointed against a permanent post in the Department/ Office during the period of his probation. However, this relaxation will admissible to the probationer so appointed provided he/she already retains a lien on a permanent post in Department/ Office under the control of any of the authorities mentioned in Column 1 below.
4. A candidate who has been continuously in a temporary service on a regular basis in the particular Department/ Office for at least 3 years on the Department/Office under the control of the authorities mentioned in the below table:

For admission to the examination, a candidate must have –
1. Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956

2. Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India)
OR
3. Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/ College/ Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time

4. Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India)
OR
5. Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/ Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India.

6. Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959
Provided that a candidate for the post of Indian Naval Armament Services (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio Regulatory Services Group 'A' may possess any of the above qualifications or qualifications mentioned below namely:-

M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as special subject.

INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICES (IES) MEDICAL EXAMINATION
Candidates finally recommended by the Commission on the basis of Engineering Services Examination, shall be required to undergo medical examination.
1. Every candidate, on being finally recommended by Commission will be required to undergo medical examination as and when so decided by the Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) irrespective of the fact that he/she has appeared for such medical examination in the past and found fit/unfit on the basis of earlier examination.
2. The medical examination will be conducted at various Railway Hospitals under Ministry of Railways (Railway Board). The findings of the Railways Medical Board will be taken as final and binding for all allotment purposes.

1. In respect of the Technical Service mentioned at A above, the total amount of myopia (including the cylinder) shall not exceed—4,00 D. Total amount of Hypermetropia (including the cylinder) shall not exceed+400D.
2. In every case of myopia funds examination should be carried out and the results recorded. In the event of any pathological condition being present which is likely to be progressive and affect the efficiency of the candidate, he shall be declared unfit.
3. Radial Keratotomy/Laser Correction etc. shall be considered as a disqualification for appointment in Railway Technical Services (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics). Permitted correction for conforming to prescribed visual standards is spectacles only.

UPSC IES PRELIMS EXAM APPLICATION PROCESS
The application process is online, Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria can fill out the application form. The application process involves several steps, such as registering, completing the application form, uploading the required documents, paying the fee, and final submission. Candidates only need to fill out the application form with correct details, otherwise, you are responsible for rejection.

STEPS TO FILL UPSC IES EXAM ONLINE APPLICATION FORM
Below are the steps that the students need to follow when completing the application form for IES :
1. Registration: The first step was to register for the IES by visiting the official website. After this, they needed to click on the 'New Registration' tab and read the instructions carefully before proceeding. Click on the "Click Here for Part-I" link given under the Part-I registration tab. After successful registration, candidates were provided the registration number and password.
2. Filling up the IES application form: The next step is to fill IES application form. Candidates need to fill in their personal, academic, and contact details in the application form and note down system-generated application numbers. They also have to create a password that will be used for future logins.
Basic details: Here, candidates need to fill in the category, nationality, personal details, select exam centres, date of birth, gender, father's name or mother's name, address, etc.
Educational qualification, work experience & languages: Here, candidates need to enter details of their graduation such as year of passing, college, percentage of marks, grade (if any). They are also required to enter their work experience. Candidates are also required to enter the languages they can read, write and speak.
3. Upload of Prescribed Documents & Images (Photographs and Scanned Signatures): upload photographs, signatures. After filling IES application form, candidates will be asked to upload the scanned copies of their recent passport size photograph and specimen signature as per the given specifications.

4. Choose your Test City Pay the Examination Fee: While applying, candidates have to select any three cities of their choice. The efforts will be made to allow the city of examination to the candidates in order of choice opted by them in their online Application Form. However, due to administrative/logistic reasons, a different city can be allotted. The candidates can pay the application fees in online mode only. A total of 167 vacancies have been announced for recruitment through the UPSC ESE 2024. The individuals who clear the preliminary examination will be eligible to appear for the Main Examination to be organized on 23 June 2024.

UPSC IES Prelims 2024: Who Can Apply
Nationality:
A candidate must be either:
1. A citizen of India or
2. A subject of Nepal or A subject of Bhutan or
3. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before the 1st of January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India or
4. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belongs to categories (2), (3) and (4) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Age Limits:
A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st January 2024 i.e., he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd January 1994 and not later than 1st January 2003.
Minimum Educational Qualifications:
1. Obtained a degree in Engineering from a university incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as universities under section-3 of the University Grants Commission act, 1956 or
2. Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India) or
3. Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from a foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time or
4. Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India) or
5. Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India or
6. Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959

UPSC IES Prelims 2024: Scheme of Exam
The ESE Prelims exam is the first stage of the selection process. The ESE Prelims Exam has two papers as tabulated below.
1. It has only objective questions in paper-I and Paper II.
2. The total mark in the UPSC ESE exam is 500 marks.
3. Paper I is common to all candidates, while paper II will have questions from the core engineering subject.

UPSC IES Prelims 2024: Admission to Examination Centres
1. Reach the exam centers of UPSC ESE at least 30 minutes before the reporting time.
2. Don't forget to carry the admit card along with a valid photo ID proof like an Aadhar card, voter ID, passport, driving license, etc to the UPSC ESE exam centers.
