Analysis
EXAM ANALYSIS
The NEET MDS 2025 exam was conducted on April 19 and was perceived by candidates as moderately difficult to difficult in sections that required clinical application and analytical thinking. Students reported that the exam emphasized understanding and applying concepts from the BDS curriculum rather than simple memorization. Sections like Quantitative and Clinical Reasoning required careful interpretation of clinical scenarios and problem-solving skills, which made time management a critical factor. While basic topics were manageable, higher order questions tested deep conceptual knowledge and the ability to apply it in practical situations. Online discussions and student feedback indicated that even candidates who performed well in mock tests found certain parts of the actual exam challenging.
Qualifiying Standards And Cutoffs In 2025
NEET MDS qualifying cutoffs are based on percentiles. Initially, candidates from the General and EWS categories needed to score at the 50th percentile, General-PwBD at the 45th percentile, and SC, ST, and OBC categories at the 40th percentile to qualify. After the exam, the National Board of Examinations reduced the qualifying percentiles by 19.863 for each category. This meant that General and EWS candidates needed a minimum of approximately 197 marks out of 960, General-PwBD candidates needed 182 marks, and SC, ST, and OBC candidates needed 168 marks. This change increased the pool of eligible candidates for counselling but did not affect the national ranking of candidates. The merit list was published on May 15, 2025 and ranks remained based on original exam scores.
Section Performance And Trends
Verbal and clinical sections were generally of moderate difficulty with questions requiring careful reading and application. Quantitative and clinical reasoning were the most time-consuming sections, requiring both calculation and interpretation skills. Subjects like Oral Pathology, Dental Materials, and Pharmacology were scoring areas for candidates who had revised thoroughly. General Medicine and General Surgery questions focused on systemic conditions affecting oral health and patient management, which required integration of knowledge from BDS and medical concepts. Overall, the exam rewarded candidates who practiced previous year papers, solved case-based questions, and managed time effectively during the test.
Cut-off Trends and Expectations For 2026
Before the percentile adjustment, qualifying marks for the General category were around 261, for General-PwBD around 244, and for SC, ST, and OBC around 227. After the adjustment, the qualifying marks were 197 for General, 182 for General-PwBD, and 168 for SC, ST, and OBC categories. These cutoffs reflect minimum eligibility. In practice, admission to top government colleges required much higher scores. For 2026, it is expected that the qualifying percentiles will follow a similar pattern, but candidates aiming for top ranks should focus on securing marks significantly above minimum eligibility. Candidates should aim for high accuracy in clinical and theoretical sections to achieve competitive ranks.
Insights For Neet MDS 2026 Preparation
Candidates preparing for NEET MDS 2026 should focus on conceptual clarity and clinical application in all subjects. Strong emphasis should be given to high-yield topics such as Dental Materials, Oral Pathology, Pharmacology, Oral Surgery, and Prosthodontics. Practicing previous year papers, solving mock tests, and managing time effectively are crucial. Understanding the 2025 cutoffs helps in setting realistic target scores. Candidates should aim for marks well above the qualifying thresholds to secure top ranks and seats in preferred colleges and specializations.

Study Tips
STUDY TIPS
Preparing for NEET MDS requires a strong focus on both conceptual understanding of BDS subjects and clinical application. First, candidates should thoroughly review the entire NEET MDS syllabus, covering subjects such as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontology, Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Pedodontics, Oral Medicine, Public Health Dentistry, and related basic medical sciences. Candidates should focus on understanding principles and practical applications rather than rote memorization.
Daily reading of previous year questions, reference books, and clinical case scenarios is essential. Candidates should maintain short notes, charts, and mnemonics for quick revision, especially for high-yield topics such as Dental Materials, Oral Pathology, and Pharmacology. For General Medicine and General Surgery, candidates should focus on systemic conditions affecting oral health and key diagnostic and treatment protocols.
Regular practice with mock tests and online question banks helps improve speed and accuracy while simulating exam conditions. Allocate 1.5 hours daily for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1 hour for Orthodontics and Periodontology, 1 hour for Prosthodontics and Conservative Dentistry, and 1 hour for basic medical sciences including General Medicine and Surgery. Dedicate 30 minutes daily to Public Health Dentistry, Pedodontics, and Oral Pathology. During this month, candidates should read textbooks and reference books thoroughly and start solving topic-wise questions.
The second month should focus on sectional practice and consolidation. Candidates should start taking subject-wise mock tests and analyze mistakes carefully. Allocate 2 hours daily for revision of previously studied topics and 1 hour for solving past NEET MDS papers. Emphasis should be on understanding high-yield topics, clinical applications, and problem-solving techniques. Candidates should also maintain quick revision notes for important formulas, procedures, and classifications.
The third month should focus on full-length mock tests and intensive revision. Candidates should attempt at least 3 to 4 full-length tests per week, strictly timing themselves for 180 minutes. Analyze performance after each test and revise weak areas. Focus on Clinical Case Scenarios, Diagnostic Procedures, Dental Materials, and Pharmacology, which are often scoring areas. During this month, avoid learning entirely new topics and concentrate on accuracy, speed, and exam strategy.
6-MONTH STUDY PLAN
The 6-month plan allows for gradual preparation, in-depth revision, and repeated practice. In the first two months, candidates should focus on building a strong conceptual foundation. Allocate daily 1 hour for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1 hour for Orthodontics, 1 hour for Periodontology, 1 hour for Prosthodontics and Conservative Dentistry, 1 hour for Pedodontics and Public Health Dentistry, and 1 hour for basic medical sciences including General Medicine and Surgery. Use this time to read textbooks, make notes, and solve basic questions.
In months 3 and 4, start topic-wise practice and sectional tests. Candidates should solve previous years’ NEET MDS papers and maintain a record of mistakes to identify weak areas. Allocate at least 2 hours daily for solving practice questions and 1 hour for revision. Begin mock tests once a week to monitor speed and accuracy and improve time management. Focus on high-yield topics and clinical scenario questions during this phase.
In months 5 and 6, focus on full-length mock tests, intensive revision, and exam strategy. Take at least 2 full-length tests per week in month five and 3 to 4 in month six. Analyze performance thoroughly after each test and revise important topics like Dental Materials, Clinical Case Applications, Oral Pathology, and Pharmacology. Pay special attention to accuracy and minimizing errors since negative marking is applicable. In the final month, candidates should refrain from starting new topics and concentrate entirely on revision, practice, and strengthening weak areas to maximize percentile and rank.

COUNSELLING PROCESS & CUTOFFS

The second stage is state counselling for the remaining seats in respective state colleges. During counselling, candidates must register online, select preferred colleges and specializations, and verify documents. Seats are allotted based on merit, rank, and category. Candidates must complete all formalities, including fee payment and document verification, to confirm admission. Failure to report during the counselling window may result in forfeiting the allotted seat.
CUTOFFS AND EXPECTED CUTOFFS FOR NEET MDS
NEET MDS cutoffs are determined based on number of candidates, difficulty of the exam, and total seats available in different colleges. In 2025, general category candidates required approximately 450 to 470 marks to secure admission in government colleges, while reserved category candidates had lower cutoffs depending on the category. Deemed and private universities generally have higher cutoffs due to limited seats and high competition.
For NEET MDS 2026, it is expected that cutoffs will remain in a similar range, with top government colleges requiring higher scores and private institutions having slightly lower thresholds. Candidates are advised to aim for maximum accuracy and high percentile to secure a preferred seat in their desired specialization and college.
