Analysis
EXAM ANALYSIS
The CUET PG 2026 examination was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to postgraduate programmes offered by participating universities and institutions. The examination was conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode across multiple dates and shifts and covered 157 test papers. The 2026 examination followed a domain-specific pattern, with candidates being tested primarily on the subject selected for admission. Based on student feedback and expert reviews, the difficulty level varied from easy to moderate to moderate/difficult, depending on the subject.
CUET PG 2026 Exam Pattern
The CUET PG 2026 question paper consisted of 75 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) based on the respective subject/domain. The paper carried a maximum of 300 marks, with 4 marks awarded for every correct answer and 1 mark deducted for every incorrect answer. The total examination duration was 90 minutes. The 2026 pattern focused on domain knowledge rather than having a separate general aptitude section.
Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
Total Questions: 75
Maximum Marks: 300
Marks for Correct Answer: +4
Negative Marking: -1
Duration: 90 minutes
Questions: Domain/subject-specific
Exam Time and Shift Details
The CUET PG 2026 examination was conducted in three shifts on the scheduled examination days. Each shift was of 90 minutes.
Shift 1: 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
Shift 2: 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM
Shift 3: 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM
The exact date and shift allotted to a candidate depended on the subject/test paper and was mentioned on the admit card.
Section-Wise / Subject-Wise Analysis
Since CUET PG 2026 did not have a common General Awareness/Aptitude section and consisted of 75 domain-specific questions, the analysis is more appropriately considered subject-wise rather than as a common section-wise paper analysis.
Humanities and Social Sciences: Papers such as Political Science, History, Psychology, Sociology and related subjects were generally based on conceptual, factual and theory-oriented questions. Several humanities papers were reported in the easy-to-moderate to moderate range. Political Science, for example, included chronology, conceptual and assertion-type questions, while History included questions requiring knowledge of different historical periods and interpretation.
Languages: Language papers were generally more focused on literature, grammar, vocabulary, authors, literary movements and language-specific knowledge. Several language papers were reported as relatively manageable, although difficulty varied according to the language and syllabus. Sanskrit and Urdu, for example, were reported in the easy-to-moderate/easy range in some analyses.
Science Subjects: Papers such as Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Botany, Zoology and related subjects mainly tested conceptual understanding, factual knowledge and application of subject fundamentals. Some science papers included analytical or calculation-based questions, making time management more important. Overall difficulty varied from moderate to moderate-difficult depending on the subject.
Commerce and Management: Commerce and management papers included questions requiring conceptual understanding along with numerical, quantitative and application-based skills. The General Management/MBA paper was reported as moderate to moderate-difficult in some reviews, with Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation requiring comparatively more time.
Computer Science and Technical Subjects: Computer Science, Engineering and other technical papers generally required stronger conceptual and application-based preparation. Numerical, analytical and technical questions could be time-consuming, so candidates needed to balance accuracy with speed. Some technical papers were reported as moderate to difficult.
Difficulty Level
The overall difficulty of CUET PG 2026 varied by subject rather than remaining uniform across the examination. Student and expert reviews generally placed many papers in the easy-to-moderate or moderate category, while some science, engineering, mathematics, management and other technical papers were reported as moderate to difficult. Humanities and several language papers were comparatively more direct and syllabus-oriented in a number of shifts.
Good Attempts with Marks
There was no single official “good attempt” figure released by NTA, and the appropriate number of attempts depended on the subject and difficulty level. Based on post-exam student reactions and expert analyses, around 50–65 correct attempts was commonly considered a strong attempt range for many papers.
Because the paper carried 4 marks per correct answer and -1 mark for each incorrect answer, the marks corresponding to different numbers of correct attempts, assuming no incorrect answers, would be:
50 correct = 200 marks
55 correct = 220 marks
60 correct = 240 marks
65 correct = 260 marks
70 correct = 280 marks
75 correct = 300 marks
However, these figures are not cut-offs or guaranteed admission scores. For example, if a candidate attempts 60 questions with 5 incorrect answers, the score would be 235 marks: 55 × 4 ? 5 × 1. Therefore, accuracy was as important as the number of questions attempted. Subject-wise analyses reported good attempts ranging broadly around 50–65 questions, with some easier papers allowing higher attempts and more difficult technical papers producing lower attempt ranges.
Overall Analysis
Overall, CUET PG 2026 was a subject-focused examination with considerable variation in difficulty across the 157 test papers. The reduced 75-question, 90-minute format required candidates to solve questions efficiently while maintaining accuracy because of the negative marking. Humanities and language papers were generally more direct in several shifts, whereas science, mathematics, management and technical papers could require greater conceptual application, calculations and time management. Therefore, the number of good attempts and the expected score should be assessed separately for each test paper, rather than applying one common benchmark to all CUET PG candidates.

Study Tips
STUDY TIPS
Candidates preparing for CUET PG should focus primarily on the subject-specific syllabus because the examination tests knowledge related to the chosen postgraduate programme. A structured study plan, regular revision, practice of previous questions and mock tests can help candidates improve their preparation and manage time effectively during the examination.
1. Understand the Syllabus and Exam Pattern
Start by checking the official CUET PG syllabus and exam pattern for the selected test paper. Identify all the topics and divide them into easy, moderate and difficult areas. This will help you prepare systematically without leaving important topics uncovered.
2. Strengthen Graduation-Level Concepts
Since CUET PG primarily tests subject knowledge at the undergraduate level, candidates should revise the important concepts, theories, formulas, definitions and fundamental topics studied during graduation. Focus on understanding concepts rather than relying only on memorisation.
3. Prepare a Realistic Study Schedule
Create a daily timetable according to the time available before the examination. Allocate more time to difficult subjects or topics and keep separate time for revision and practice. Avoid making an unrealistic schedule that is difficult to follow consistently.
4. Make Short Notes
Prepare concise notes containing important definitions, formulas, facts, concepts, dates, theories and key points. These notes can be particularly useful for quick revision during the final stage of preparation.
5. Practise Previous Questions
Solve previous-year CUET PG questions and questions based on the prescribed syllabus. This helps you understand the type and level of questions and identify topics that require additional preparation.
6. Take Regular Mock Tests
Attempt full-length mock tests regularly after completing sufficient syllabus coverage. Mock tests help improve speed, accuracy and time management. After every test, analyse incorrect and unanswered questions and revise the related concepts.
7. Focus on Accuracy
Do not attempt questions randomly. Read every question carefully and avoid spending too much time on a single difficult question. Maintain a balance between speed and accuracy while practising.
8. Revise Regularly
Revision should be an important part of your preparation. Revise each topic multiple times instead of studying it only once. Keep the final weeks primarily for revision, practice tests and weak-topic improvement.
9. Follow Reliable Study Material
Use standard graduation-level books, class notes and reliable preparation material relevant to your selected subject. Avoid collecting too many books or study sources, as this can make preparation unnecessarily difficult.
10. Analyse Your Preparation
Maintain a record of your mock-test scores and identify your weak areas. Regularly compare your performance to see whether your accuracy, speed and topic-wise performance are improving.
11. Prepare According to the Selected Test Paper
CUET PG offers multiple test papers, and the preparation requirement depends on the subject selected. Candidates should therefore give priority to the specific syllabus and programme requirements of the university and course they are targeting.
12. Stay Consistent
Consistency is more important than studying for very long hours occasionally. Follow your timetable every day, revise regularly and maintain adequate rest so that you can continue your preparation effectively.

Daily Study Routine
Candidates can divide their available study time into concept study, practice questions, revision and mock-test analysis. A typical routine can include 3–4 hours for new topics, 1–2 hours for question practice and 1 hour for revision, depending on the candidate's available time and subject requirements. Candidates preparing alongside college or work can adjust these hours according to their schedule while maintaining daily consistency.
Final Preparation Strategy
For all three preparation periods, candidates should follow the same basic cycle: Study ? Practise ? Analyse ? Revise. The 6-month plan provides more time for detailed syllabus coverage, the 3-month plan focuses on faster completion and intensive practice, while the 1-month plan should concentrate mainly on revision, mock tests and improving weak areas.

PROGRAMS OFFERED
CUET PG 2026 offers admission to a wide range of postgraduate programmes through participating Central Universities, State Universities, Government Institutions, and Private/Deemed Universities. The programmes vary by university, and candidates must check the specific programme eligibility and accepted CUET PG test paper of the university where they want admission.
The major programme areas include M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., MCA, MBA, M.Ed., M.Tech., M.P.Ed., LLM, M.Pharm., Master of Public Health, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library and Information Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Science, Commerce, Management, Education, Law, Computer Science, Engineering and Technology, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Forensic Science, Agriculture and related fields.
NTA's 2026 subject list includes test papers such as Economics, Commerce, General Management, Mass Communication and Journalism, LLM, Education, Physical Education, Public Health, Computer Science/IT/AI, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Life Science, Forensic Science, Geology and Pharmacy.
Important: CUET PG is an entrance test, not a single programme list. The actual programmes available depend on the participating university, and the same CUET PG test paper may be used for different programmes at different universities.
TOP COLLEGES & TOTAL SEATS
The CUET PG 2026 seat matrix is university- and programme-specific, as the National Testing Agency (NTA) does not release a single combined seat matrix for all participating institutions.
Major universities such as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), University of Delhi (DU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), University of Hyderabad, BBAU and Pondicherry University release their own programme-wise seat details.
For example, JNU's 2026–27 PG admission prospectus lists 39 seats in M.Sc. Environmental Sciences, 38 in M.Sc. Life Sciences, 10 in M.Sc. (Research) Life Sciences and 41 in M.Sc. Physics. Therefore, the total number of CUET PG seats varies according to the university, programme and category, and there is no single overall seat figure for CUET PG 2026.

The admit cards for candidates appearing on March 11, 12 and 13 were released separately, followed by admit cards for examinations scheduled on March 16, 17, 18 and 19, and March 24, 25 and 27, 2026. NTA therefore did not release one common admit-card date for all candidates.

COUNSELLING PROCESS & CUTOFFS
The CUET PG 2026 counselling and admission process is conducted separately by each participating university. NTA conducts the entrance examination and declares the CUET PG result, but it does not conduct a common centralized counselling process for all universities. Candidates must therefore visit the official website of their preferred university and complete its separate admission or counselling registration process.
Step-by-Step Counselling Process
Check the CUET PG Result
Candidates first need to check their CUET PG 2026 scorecard and note their subject-wise score and other result details.
Select the Participating University
Candidates should check the list of CUET PG participating universities and identify the universities offering their desired postgraduate programme. NTA lists participating Central Universities, State Universities, Government Institutions and Private/Deemed Universities.
Check University Eligibility and Admission Notice
Candidates must visit the official website of the respective university and check its PG admission notification, eligibility criteria, programme-wise requirements, seat availability, reservation rules and admission schedule. Eligibility requirements can differ from one university to another.
Register Separately for University Admission
Candidates have to complete the separate admission/counselling registration of the university. The CUET PG application form submitted to NTA does not automatically complete the admission process of every university.
For example, JNU specifically requires candidates to apply separately after the declaration of CUET PG 2026 results.
Fill the University Admission Form
After registration, candidates need to enter the required personal, academic and CUET PG details and select the programme(s) for which they want to be considered.
Upload Required Documents
Candidates generally need to upload documents such as:
CUET PG 2026 scorecard
CUET PG application details
Graduation marksheet/certificate
Category certificate, if applicable
EWS/OBC-NCL certificate, where applicable
PwBD certificate, if applicable
Photo and signature
Other documents prescribed by the university
The exact document requirements should be checked in the respective university's admission notice.
Pay the Counselling/Admission Registration Fee
Candidates have to pay the applicable university counselling or admission registration fee, if prescribed. The fee and payment rules differ between universities.
Merit List / Rank List
The university prepares its programme-wise merit list or rank list using the applicable admission criteria. The admission criteria are not necessarily identical across all participating universities. For example, JNU states that admission is based on CUET PG performance together with applicable deprivation points.
Seat Allotment
Candidates who are selected are offered a seat in the programme according to the university's merit, eligibility, reservation rules, available seats and other applicable criteria.
Accept the Allotted Seat
If a candidate accepts the allotted seat, they must complete the required admission formalities and fee payment within the deadline given by the university.
Document Verification
The university verifies the candidate's original documents and eligibility. Candidates may be required to appear for online or physical document verification, depending on the university's admission procedure.
Final Admission
After successful document verification and payment of the required admission fee, the candidate's admission is confirmed. The candidate must then follow the university's instructions regarding registration, reporting and commencement of classes.
Important Point
There is no single CUET PG counselling date or common counselling portal for all participating universities. Each university releases its own admission schedule. For example, BHU began registration for PG admissions for the 2026–27 academic session on May 19, 2026, while other universities followed their own schedules.
Cutoffs for CUET PG 2026
University- and course-specific (no fixed NTA cutoff); released as minimum scores for shortlisting.
Top Universities Trends (based on previous years; vary widely):
DU/BHU/JNU: High for popular courses (e.g., MA English/Economics, M.Sc. Physics/Chemistry, MBA equivalents: often 200–300+ out of normalized scores, depending on paper; percentiles 90+ for top calls).
Reserved categories: 10–20% lower.
Factors: Competition, seats, difficulty; cutoffs released per round.
Key Advice:
Monitor university websites (e.g., admission.uod.ac.in for DU, bhu.ac.in for BHU) after results—schedules announced there.
Apply to multiple universities if targeting several.
Cutoffs aren't announced in advance—derived from merit lists; aim high scores for top preferences.
