OFFICIAL SYLLABUS

The CBSE Class 11 English syllabus aims to improve students’ reading, writing, grammar, and communication skills. It includes Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Creative Writing Skills, along with literature from the prescribed textbooks, Hornbill and Snapshots. The syllabus covers prose, poetry, and supplementary stories to develop students’ language proficiency, vocabulary, critical thinking, and understanding of literary themes.

Section A Reading Skills

I. Reading Comprehension through Unseen Passages 10+8=18 Marks

1. One unseen passage to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference and vocabulary. The passage may be factual, descriptive or literary.

2. One unseen case-based factual passage with verbal/visual inputs like statistical data, charts etc.to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference and evaluation.

Note: The combined word limit for both the passages will be 600-750. Multiple Choice Questions / Objective Type Questions will be asked.

3. Note Making and Summarization based on a passage of approximately 200-250 words.

Section B Grammar and Creative Writing Skills– 23 Marks

4. Questions on Gap filling (Tenses, Clauses)

6. Short writing task – Classified Advertisements, up to 50 words. One out of the two given questions to be answered (3 Marks: Format: 1 / Content: 1 / Expression: 1)

7. Short writing task –Poster up to 50 words. One out of the two given questions to be answered. (3 marks: Format: 1 / Content: 1 / Expression: 1)

8. Long Writing task: Speech in 120-150 words based on verbal / visual cues related to contemporary / age-appropriate topic. One out of the two given questions to be answered. (5 Marks: Format: 1 / Content: 2 / Expression: 2)

9. Long Writing Task: Debate based on visual/verbal inputs in 120-150 words, thematically related to contemporary, topical issues. One out of the two given questions to be answered. (5 Marks: Format: 1 / Content: 2 / Expression: 2)

Section C Literature

Text Book and Supplementary Reading Text-31 Marks

This section will have variety of assessment items including Multiple Choice Questions, Objective Type Questions, Short Answer Type Questions and Long Answer Type Questions to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and extrapolation beyond the text.

10. One Poetry extract out of two, from the book Hornbill, to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference and appreciation. 3x1=3 Marks

11. One Prose extract out of two, from the book Hornbill, to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and appreciation. 3x1=3 Marks

12. One prose extract out of two, from the book Snapshots, to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference and appreciation. 4x1=4 Marks

13. Two Short answer type questions (one from Prose and one from Poetry, from the book Hornbill), outof four, to be answered in 40-50 words. Questions should elicit inferential responses through critical thinking. 3x2=6 Marks

14. One Short answer type question, from the book Snapshots, to be answered in 40- 50 words. Questions should elicit inferential responses through critical thinking. One out of two questions to be done. 3x1=3 Marks

15. One Long answer type question, from Prose/Poetry of Hornbill, to be answered in 120-150 words. Questions can be based on incident / theme / passage / extract / event, as reference points to assess extrapolation beyond and across the text. The question will elicit analytical and evaluative response from the student. Any one out of two questions to be done. 1x6=6 Marks

16. One Long answer type question, based on the chapters from the book Snapshots, to be answered in 120-150 words, to assess global comprehension and extrapolation beyond the text. Questions to provide analytical and evaluative responses, using incidents, events, themes, as reference points. Any one out of two questions to be done. 1x6=6 Marks

EXAM PATTERN

The CBSE Class 11 English exam pattern generally consists of a theory paper carrying 80 marks and an internal assessment carrying 20 marks, making a total of 100 marks. The question paper is divided into three main sections: Reading Skills, Grammar and Creative Writing Skills, and Literature. It assesses students’ reading comprehension, writing ability, grammatical accuracy, and understanding of prose, poetry, and other prescribed literary texts.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

CBSE Class 11 admission requires students to pass the Class 10 examination conducted by CBSE or another recognised board. Admission depends on school rules, seat availability, subject-specific requirements, and submission of the required documents.

Conditions of eligibility for admission to class XI

1. Candidates who have been studying in a School recognised by or affiliated to this Board or any other recognised Board of Secondary Education in India.

2. Candidates can not take admission directly in class XI.

3. Candidates had completed a regular course of study for class X and passed class X examination from a school affilicated to this Board.

4. The candidates percentage for attendance should be 75% so that the Board to make him/her eligible for the Examinations.

5. Candidate can be admitted to a school only on the transfer of the parents(s) or shifting of their families from one place to another, after procuring from the student the marksheet and the Transfer Certificate duly countersigned by the Educational Authorities of the Board concerned.

6. There is no age limit for candidates taking the Examination.

7. Candidate should have doucments in support of his having passed the qualifying or equivalent qualifying examination.

EXAM ANALYSIS

Overall Analysis:

The CBSE Class 12 English Core Board Exam 2026 was overall easy to moderate and student-friendly. The question paper was largely based on the prescribed NCERT syllabus and was reported to be closely aligned with the CBSE sample paper pattern. The paper tested students' comprehension, interpretation, analytical ability and critical thinking along with their knowledge of literature and writing skills.

Section-wise Analysis:

Reading Section:

The reading comprehension section was generally manageable. Questions focused on comprehension, interpretation, inference and analysis. Students who had good reading practice were able to attempt this section comfortably.

Creative Writing Skills:

The writing section was considered relatively easy and familiar in format. Questions followed the expected CBSE pattern. However, the job application question caused some confusion among a section of students.

Literature Section:

The literature section was based on the prescribed NCERT texts and included questions requiring understanding, interpretation and critical thinking. Experts described the literature questions as competency-based rather than relying only on direct factual recall.

Time Management:

Although the overall paper was manageable, some teachers and students found it slightly lengthy. Proper time management was therefore important, particularly while attempting the reading and literature sections.

STUDY TIPS

3 MONTHS STUDY PLAN

Month 1: Complete the syllabus systematically, understand the basic concepts, and prepare short revision notes for each chapter or topic. Give extra attention to difficult and high-priority areas.

Month 2: Complete the remaining syllabus and begin intensive revision. Practise textbook questions, previous-year questions, sample papers, numerical problems, diagrams, and application-based questions according to the subject.

Month 3: Focus primarily on revision and examination practice. Take full-length mock tests under actual exam conditions, analyse mistakes, revise weak topics, and repeatedly review important concepts, formulas, definitions, diagrams, and key facts. Keep the final days for light revision and avoid starting major new topics.

6 MONTHS STUDY PLAN

Months 1–2: Understand the complete syllabus and build strong conceptual foundations. Study each subject regularly and complete the easier and core topics first while maintaining concise notes.

Months 3–4: Complete the remaining syllabus and strengthen difficult topics. Start practising chapter-wise questions, previous-year questions, numerical problems, diagrams, and application-based questions. Revise completed chapters regularly.

Month 5: Begin full-syllabus revision and increase examination practice. Solve sample and previous-year papers within the prescribed time, analyse errors, and focus on topics where performance is weak.

Month 6: Use the final month mainly for revision and mock tests. Follow a subject-wise revision cycle, practise under exam conditions, correct recurring mistakes, and revise important formulas, definitions, diagrams, concepts, and facts. Maintain a consistent routine, adequate sleep, and a calm approach during the final days.
