EXAM PATTERN

The institute publishes the BITS HD 2026 exam pattern on its official website and in the information brochure. Candidates planning to appear for the examination are advised to carefully review the exam pattern before applying.

Test 1 is mandatory for all candidates. Applicants seeking admission to higher degree programmes—except M.E. in Sanitation Science, Technology and Management and M.E. Software Systems—are required to appear for BITS HD Test 2. In contrast, candidates applying specifically for M.E. Software Systems or M.E. in Sanitation Science, Technology and Management must appear for a separate, dedicated test.

Details of The Admission Test

Test I: Duration: 45 Minutes & Total No of questions: 30

The test I is compulsory for all students who are applying for any of the Higher Degree programs of the Institute and will consist of the following sections:

a. Core Mathematics - 15 Questions

b. English Language Skills & Logical Reasoning -15 Questions

c. Total 30 Questions to be asked 

Test II: Duration: 105 Minutes & Total number of questions: 70

Test II is for students applying to all Higher Degree programs except those who are applying for M.E. in Environmental Engineering and M.E. in Software Systems. This paper will attempt to test the student’s grasp of the basic subjects of his/her discipline. The discipline courses of different degree programs of BITS have been used for constructing the questions.

Test for Software Systems: Duration: 60 Minutes & Total number of questions: 50

This special test for Software Systems is required for only those students who are applying for M.E. Software Systems.

Test for M.E. Environmental Engineering Duration: 60 Minutes & Total number of questions: 50

This special test for Environmental Engineering is required for only those students who are applying for M.E. Environmental Engineering.

Marking Scheme

a. For all the above tests, the questions are of objective type (multiple choice questions); each question with four answer choices, and only one is the correct choice. Each correct answer fetches 3 marks, while each incorrect answer has a penalty of 1 mark. No marks are awarded or deducted for questions not attempted. While the candidate can skip a question, the computer will not allow the candidate to choose more than one option as the correct answer.

b. All the questions and instructions for the test will be in English only.

c. The questions will be selected at random from a large question bank. Different candidates will get different question sets. An expert committee will ensure that the question sets are of comparable difficulty level, content, question type, etc.

EXAM ANALYSIS

The BITS HD 2026 exam analysis covers the exam pattern, section-wise difficulty, question distribution, good attempts, and overall level of the examination. The BITS HD 2026 Online Test was conducted in computer-based mode on May 25 and 26, 2026. The test consisted of objective-type questions with 3 marks for a correct answer and a negative marking of 1 mark for an incorrect answer.

BITS HD 2026 Exam Date and Shift

The BITS HD 2026 Online Test was conducted on May 25 and May 26, 2026. BITS Pilani did not publish one common shift-wise timing schedule in the brochure. The official brochure states that the test date, time and examination-centre address were mentioned on the candidate's Hall Ticket. Therefore, candidates had to check their individual admit card for the exact exam time and shift.

BITS HD 2026 Exam Pattern

The BITS HD 2026 test pattern varied according to the programme. Test I was compulsory for all candidates and consisted of 30 questions to be attempted in 45 minutes. It included 15 questions from Core Mathematics and 15 questions from English Language Skills and Logical Reasoning.

For most Higher Degree programmes, Test II consisted of 70 questions with a duration of 105 minutes and tested candidates on the basic subjects of their respective disciplines. Candidates applying for M.E. Software Systems and M.E. Environmental Engineering appeared for separate 50-question tests of 60 minutes.

Section-Wise Analysis

Core Mathematics: The Mathematics section tested candidates on fundamental mathematical concepts and required quick calculations and accurate application of formulas. Candidates with regular practice of objective questions could manage this section more effectively.

English Language Skills & Logical Reasoning: This section contained 15 questions and tested language ability and reasoning skills. The section required candidates to understand questions quickly and avoid spending too much time on individual problems.

Technical/Discipline-Specific Section: Test II focused on the basic subjects of the candidate's chosen discipline. Strong conceptual understanding of undergraduate-level subjects was important, particularly for candidates attempting the technical questions under strict time constraints.

Software Systems/Environmental Engineering: Candidates applying for these programmes appeared for separate 50-question tests. The questions were based on the respective programme-specific syllabus.

BITS HD 2026 Difficulty Level

The overall difficulty of BITS HD 2026 can be described as moderate, although the actual difficulty varied according to the programme and the question set received by the candidate. Test I required a good combination of speed and accuracy, while the technical section primarily tested conceptual knowledge of core undergraduate subjects. Since the examination system generated question sets for candidates, individual questions could differ while maintaining comparable difficulty levels.

BITS HD 2026 Good Attempts

BITS Pilani has not officially released a fixed number of good attempts for BITS HD 2026. Therefore, a specific number should not be presented as an official benchmark. 6 Month Study Plan

A six-month preparation plan is suitable for candidates who want to build their concepts from the basics and get enough time for revision and mock tests.

Months 1–2: Build the Basics
Start by understanding the BITS HD syllabus and exam pattern. Cover the fundamental concepts of your core/technical subjects. Along with technical preparation, regularly study Mathematics, English Language Skills and Logical Reasoning. Prepare short notes and maintain a separate formula sheet.

Months 3–4: Complete the Syllabus
Focus on completing the remaining technical subjects and important topics. Start solving topic-wise and previous-year questions after completing each topic. Identify weak areas and revise them regularly. Gradually increase your speed while solving questions.

Months 5–6: Revision and Mock Tests
Complete your remaining syllabus and begin intensive revision. Take regular sectional and full-length mock tests. Analyse every mock test carefully and note the questions you answered incorrectly or could not attempt. Work on improving both speed and accuracy. In the final weeks, focus mainly on revision, practice and mock tests.

3 Month Study Plan

A three-month plan is suitable for candidates who already have a good understanding of their undergraduate subjects.

Month 1: Concept Revision
Revise the important concepts of all core subjects and cover high-priority topics first. Simultaneously prepare Mathematics, English and Logical Reasoning. Start solving practice questions after each topic.

Month 2: Practice and Syllabus Completion
Complete the remaining important topics and increase your question-solving practice. Solve previous questions and take sectional tests. Give extra attention to subjects and topics where your accuracy is low.

Month 3: Revision and Mock Tests
Focus mainly on revision and full-length mock tests. Take mock tests under exam-like conditions and analyse your performance after each test. Revise formulas, important concepts and frequently made mistakes regularly.

3 Month Study Plan

A one-month plan is best for candidates who have already studied the core subjects and need focused revision.

Week 1: Revise important concepts, formulas and high-priority topics. Focus more on topics that carry greater importance for your programme.

Week 2: Complete the remaining important topics and solve topic-wise questions. Pay special attention to weak areas.

Week 3: Start taking full-length mock tests regularly. Analyse mistakes after every test and work on improving time management and accuracy.

Week 4: Focus on final revision, formulas, short notes and weak topics. Take a few full-length mock tests and avoid starting completely new topics.

Last 7 Days Before BITS HD

During the final week, focus on revision rather than learning new topics. Revise formulas, short notes and important concepts, practise questions from weak areas and attempt mock tests. Since the BITS HD exam has negative marking, practise selecting questions carefully and avoid unnecessary guessing.
