One of the major changes introduced under the latest CBSE circular is the compulsory inclusion of Vocational Education (Skill Education) in the Class 9 curriculum for 2026-27.

Students will have to choose either Kaushal Vikas or one of the 22 skill subjects prescribed by CBSE. The available skill subjects cover different professional and practical learning areas, including:

  • Retail

  • Information Technology

  • Security

  • Automotive

  • Introduction to Financial Markets

  • Tourism

  • Beauty and Wellness

  • Agriculture

  • Banking and Insurance

  • Health Care

  • Multimedia

  • Artificial Intelligence

  • Data Science

  • Electronics and Hardware

  • Design Thinking and Innovation

Students selecting Kaushal Vikas will be evaluated through school-based internal assessment. Those opting for any of the 22 skill subjects will have to appear for the respective subject's Class 10 Board Examination.

CBSE Class 9 Students Will Study 9 Subjects

According to the revised Scheme of Studies, students enrolled in Class 9 during the 2026-27 academic session will study nine prescribed subjects. These subjects cover languages, core academic areas, creative education, physical well-being and vocational learning.

Students can choose one additional optional subject from the list of 57 subjects notified by CBSE. If they select a language as their optional subject, it must be different from the languages already chosen under R1, R2 and R3.

Individuals in Society, CT and AI Modules Not Included in the Curriculum

CBSE has clarified that certain curricular areas will not be included in the syllabus for the Class 9 batch of 2026-27.

These include:

  • Inter-disciplinary Area, including Individuals in Society

  • Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT and AI) modules

Additionally, Environmental Education will not be included in the Class 10 curriculum for these students during the 2027-28 academic session.

According to the board, these changes have been made to align the introduction of the respective curricular areas with the planned implementation schedule.

CBSE Class 10 Board Exams 2027-28: Subjects with Mandatory Board Examinations

The revised scheme specifies five compulsory subjects for the Class 10 Board Examination in the 2027-28 academic session.

Students from the current Class 9 batch will have to appear for Board Examinations in the following subjects:

  • Language R1

  • Language R2

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Social Science

Apart from these five subjects, students may also have to appear for Board Examinations in certain additional subjects, depending on their choices. These include:

  • The selected optional subject

  • Mathematics Advanced

  • Science Advanced

  • Any one of the 22 skill subjects, if the student chooses a skill subject instead of Kaushal Vikas

The applicable assessment and examination requirements will depend on the subject selected by the student under the CBSE scheme.

Kaushal Vikas vs Skill Subject: Check Assessment Rules

CBSE has prescribed different assessment methods for students choosing Kaushal Vikas and those selecting one of the 22 skill subjects.

NSQF certificate for successful candidates

Students opting for Kaushal Vikas will not be required to appear for a separate Board Examination in that subject. Schools will conduct the internal assessment and issue their own certificates to students who secure at least 33% marks.

Students selecting one of the 22 skill subjects must appear for the relevant Class 10 Board Examination. Their marks and grades will be included in the CBSE marksheet. Successful candidates will also receive an NSQF certificate.

CBSE Class 10 Passing Criteria 2027-28

CBSE has clarified the minimum passing requirements for students appearing in the Class 10 Board Examination under the revised scheme.

Students must secure at least 33% marks in each of the five mandatory subjects: Language R1, Language R2, Mathematics, Science and Social Science.

The minimum qualifying requirement will be calculated using the combined marks obtained in the Board Examination and Internal Assessment.

Example of the 33% Passing Criteria:

AssessmentMarks Obtained

Board Examination

24 out of 80

Internal Assessment

9 out of 20

Total Marks

33 out of 100

Passing Status

Passed

In this example, the student secures 33 marks out of 100 after combining the Board Examination and Internal Assessment scores and therefore meets the minimum passing requirement.

CBSE Subject Replacement Rule for Class 10

The updated CBSE scheme also introduces subject replacement provisions under specific conditions.

If a student selects one of the 22 skill subjects and fails to secure 33% marks in Mathematics, Science or Social Science but passes the selected skill subject, the skill subject may replace the failed subject while calculating the Class 10 result.

However, this replacement facility will not be available to students who select Kaushal Vikas.

A similar provision applies to language subjects. If a student fails either Language R1 or R2 but passes an optional language subject, the optional language may replace the failed language, subject to the conditions prescribed by CBSE.

Students should carefully review the official circular to understand the applicable replacement rules and eligibility requirements.

CBSE Class 9 Optional Subjects 2026-27

CBSE has provided a list of 57 optional subjects from which students can select one additional subject. The available choices cover languages, arts, vocational areas and other academic disciplines.

Some of the optional subjects include:

  • Indian and foreign languages

  • Music

  • Painting

  • Home Science

  • National Cadet Corps (NCC)

  • Computer Applications

  • Elements of Business

  • Elements of Book Keeping and Accountancy

  • Mathematics Advanced

  • Science Advanced

Students should consult the official Scheme of Studies to check the complete list of available subjects and select an option according to their academic interests and future study plans.
