The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the MBBS Seat Matrix for the academic year 2026-27, covering undergraduate medical courses and excluding Institutes of National Importance (INIs). The updated seat matrix includes seats approved for new medical colleges as well as increased intake capacity in existing colleges.

NMC has directed all medical colleges and institutions to ensure that admissions are made strictly within the approved annual intake capacity. Colleges cannot admit students beyond the number of seats approved and notified by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB).

NMC MBBS Seat Matrix 2026-27: Key Highlights

• The seat matrix covers undergraduate MBBS courses for 2026-27, excluding INIs.

• New medical colleges and increased MBBS intake have been included where approved by the competent authorities.

• Approvals may involve the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB), 1st Appeal Committee, NMC, and 2nd Appeal Committee, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW).

• Medical colleges must admit students only against the seats approved in the official seat matrix.

• Admissions exceeding the approved intake will be considered non-compliance with the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

• Colleges violating the approved intake may face appropriate regulatory and penal action.

Seat Matrix Subject to Revision

The NMC stated that the MBBS seat matrix may be revised based on subsequent decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority.

If any revision is made, the updated seat matrix will be uploaded on the official NMC website. Central and respective State Counselling Committees will have to consider the revised seat matrix while conducting counselling and admissions.

Guidelines for Counselling Committees

If a Counselling Committee finds any discrepancy or deviation in the approved seat matrix, the matter must be referred to the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) for clarification.

Counselling Committees have been directed not to permit admission against seats exceeding the number approved and notified by MARB. Similarly, medical colleges cannot admit students beyond their approved annual intake capacity under any circumstances.

Action Against Admission Beyond Approved Seats

NMC has reiterated that any admission made beyond the approved intake capacity will be treated as non-compliance with the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed under it.

Such violations may result in appropriate regulatory and penal action against the concerned medical college or institution.
