The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is likely to release the revised schedule for NEET SS 2025 Round 2 counselling following the Supreme Court’s direction to restore 151 vacant Super Speciality medical seats to the central counselling pool. The court’s decision has resolved the dispute concerning Tamil Nadu’s in-service Super Speciality seats under the All India Quota (AIQ).

The Supreme Court has directed that the remaining counselling activities be completed within two weeks. The development is expected to provide relief to candidates waiting for admission to Doctor of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) Super Speciality programmes.

Supreme Court Order Removes Roadblock to NEET SS Round 2 Counselling

The second round of NEET SS 2025 counselling had been delayed due to a legal dispute related to the case Tamilvani & Others vs State of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu had approached the court through a review petition seeking permission to retain 151 vacant in-service Super Speciality seats instead of returning them to the central counselling pool.

On July 29, 2026, the Supreme Court rejected the attempt to prolong the dispute and ordered that all 151 vacant seats be restored to the central pool. Following the directive, MCC is required to complete the pending counselling process within the stipulated 14-day period.

The MCC is now expected to issue an updated counselling notification containing the revised schedule and other instructions.

151 DM and MCh Seats Restored to Central Pool

The return of 151 Super Speciality seats to the central pool is expected to bring a significant change to the NEET SS Round 2 seat matrix. The restored seats include highly sought-after DM and MCh programmes.

Candidates who have already submitted their choices may need to review their preferences after MCC publishes the revised seat matrix. The counselling authority is expected to provide further instructions through an official notification on the Super Speciality counselling portal.

NEET SS Round 2: Auto-Upgradation Provision

The counselling process includes an automatic seat upgradation facility for Round 2. Candidates who participated in the first round will be considered for an upgraded seat in the second round, regardless of whether they had previously submitted an upgradation willingness form.

If a candidate does not receive a better seat during Round 2, the seat allotted to them in Round 1 will continue to remain protected, subject to the applicable counselling rules.

Medical Bodies Welcome Supreme Court Decision

Medical organisations, including the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), have welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to restore the vacant seats and move the counselling process forward.

Medical bodies have pointed out that prolonged delays in Super Speciality admissions can affect the professional progression of specialist doctors and also create difficulties for healthcare institutions dependent on trained medical professionals.
