Description
Ahead of the declaration of the NEET UG 2026 results, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has published the approved MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, providing medical aspirants with a clearer understanding of the seats available during the counselling process.
Issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on July 14, the seat matrix includes all undergraduate MBBS seats except those offered by Institutes of National Importance (INIs). The details have been shared with all medical colleges and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), which is responsible for conducting counselling under the All India Quota.
According to the latest data, a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats have been approved across 823 medical colleges. Of these, 1,27,028 seats represent renewed intake from existing colleges, while 9,911 seats have been newly sanctioned, highlighting the continued expansion of medical education infrastructure in the country.
2,400 Seats Added Through New Medical Colleges
The newly approved seats include 2,400 MBBS seats in 25 new medical colleges. Among these, seven government medical colleges will offer 400 seats, while 18 private medical colleges will contribute 2,000 seats. The remaining increase in seat capacity has come from approved intake expansions at existing institutions.
Private Sector Contributes the Larger Share of Seats
While government medical colleges remain higher in number, private institutions account for a greater share of the total MBBS seats.
Government medical colleges comprise 441 institutions with 63,296 seats, including 61,185 renewed seats and 2,111 newly approved seats.
Private medical colleges include 382 institutions offering 73,643 seats, of which 65,843 seats are renewed and 7,800 seats have been newly approved. This year's expansion indicates that much of the additional capacity has come from the private medical education sector.
Karnataka Tops the List in MBBS Seat Availability
Among all states, Karnataka has retained the highest number of approved MBBS seats, with 15,395 seats spread across 75 medical colleges.
Uttar Pradesh has the largest number of medical colleges in the country at 88, offering 14,000 MBBS seats. Tamil Nadu follows with 78 colleges and 13,999 seats, while Maharashtra has 86 colleges with 13,099 seats. Telangana has 66 medical colleges offering 10,250 seats.
The state-wise distribution is expected to play an important role in candidates' counselling preferences after the NEET UG 2026 results are announced.
MARB Directs Private Colleges to Submit Bank Guarantee
MARB has instructed all private medical colleges that have received approval either for establishing a new MBBS college or increasing intake capacity to submit the required Electronic Bank Guarantee within seven days of the public notice.
The guarantee must be submitted to the Director, MARB, with the required details shared through the email addresses specified in the notification. The Commission has stated that the Letter of Permission (LoP) will be issued only after the Electronic Bank Guarantee is received and verified.
Seat Matrix Subject to Revision
The NMC has clarified that the published seat matrix is provisional and may be revised if required based on decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority.
Any updated seat matrix will be uploaded on the official NMC website and will be considered by both the Medical Counselling Committee and state counselling authorities during the admission process.
The Commission has also directed counselling authorities to adhere strictly to the approved intake. In case of any discrepancy in the notified seat matrix, the matter must be referred to MARB for clarification. It has further emphasised that no admissions should be permitted beyond the number of seats officially approved and notified, making the published seat matrix the governing document for MBBS admissions in the 2026-27 academic session.
