IPS Officer Jagmohan Meena Resigns at 37 After Distinguished Career; From IIT Kanpur to New Professional Journey

For many UPSC candidates, becoming a part of the Indian Police Service (IPS) represents the ultimate achievement after years of dedication and preparation. However, for Jagmohan Meena, an IPS officer of the 2013 Odisha cadre, the service was one chapter in a broader professional journey.

Currently serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bhubaneswar, Meena has decided to resign from the IPS at the age of 37. He has stated that the decision is based on personal considerations and his plans for the next phase of his career.

His resignation has drawn attention because of his impressive professional background. An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, a UPSC Civil Services Examination qualifier with All India Rank (AIR) 849, and a recipient of the Police Medal for Gallantry, Meena has had a career that many young aspirants look up to. He is now preparing to explore opportunities beyond government service.

From IIT Kanpur Graduate to IPS Officer

Born in Sikar district of Rajasthan in 1989, Jagmohan Meena completed his early education before securing admission to IIT Kanpur through the highly competitive IIT-JEE examination.

After completing his engineering education, he chose to pursue the UPSC Civil Services Examination instead of following a conventional engineering career path. His efforts resulted in success when he secured AIR 849 in the 2012 Civil Services Examination.

His UPSC performance included:

• Written Examination: 724 marks

• Personality Test: 181 marks

• Final Score: 905 marks

Based on his rank and preferences, he was allotted the Odisha cadre of the Indian Police Service as part of the 2013 batch.

A Career Defined by Courage and Public Service

During his tenure in the IPS, Meena handled several significant policing responsibilities in Odisha. His contribution to anti-Maoist operations earned him the Police Medal for Gallantry in 2019, an honour awarded for exceptional bravery and dedication while performing official duties.

Before announcing his resignation, Meena was serving as the DCP of Bhubaneswar, a key position involving responsibilities related to public safety, administration and law-and-order management.

His decision to leave the service came amid discussions surrounding recent law-and-order developments in the Bhubaneswar region. However, Meena clarified that his resignation was not influenced by any departmental or political pressure. He described it as a personal decision taken after careful consideration and discussions with his family and close associates.

Planning a New Career Path

The resignation process is currently awaiting formal approval. After leaving the IPS, Meena is expected to explore opportunities in the private sector as part of his long-term career strategy.

Reports indicate that he may become associated with a business venture linked to a family member in Rajasthan. However, Meena has primarily described his move as a planned transition towards new professional goals.

Jagmohan Meena's career reflects a series of important milestones—from clearing IIT-JEE and graduating from IIT Kanpur to cracking the UPSC examination, serving as an IPS officer, receiving a gallantry award, and eventually choosing a different professional direction.
