Description

A new spider species, informally referred to as the “ballista spider,” has been discovered in the rainforests of far north Queensland, Australia. It belongs to the genus Propostira within the cobweb spider family Theridiidae and has not yet been formally described with a scientific name.

Taxonomy and Classification

The ballista spider is classified under the family Theridiidae, commonly known as cobweb spiders. Members of the genus Propostira are known for constructing irregular, tangled webs and using silk-based mechanisms to capture prey.

Hunting Mechanism

This spider exhibits a unique hunting strategy in which it uses a spring-loaded silk structure to catapult green tree ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) into its web. When an ant bites a silk cone, the stored elastic energy in the silk is suddenly released, propelling the insect with extreme force into the web for capture. The acceleration involved has been recorded at up to 1,367 m/s²—around 140 times the force of gravity and significantly higher than the forces experienced by fighter pilots.

Research and Observation

The behavior was initially observed in 2022 in far north Queensland by biomedical researcher Greg Anderson. It was later documented in detail in early 2023 by Professor Ajay Narendra and PhD student Pranav Joshi using high-speed and infrared imaging. Researchers from Macquarie University and the University of Greifswald published their findings in the journal Current Biology.

According to Professor Narendra, the silk structure functions like a biological elastic trap that rapidly releases stored energy to launch prey. Spider silk, a protein-based material known for its strength and elasticity, plays a key role in this highly specialized predatory strategy. Web-based prey capture is common among Theridiidae spiders, but this ballistic mechanism is unusually advanced.
