Description
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially declared the results of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026. Candidates who appeared for the examination conducted on May 24, 2026, can now check their qualifying status on the commission's official website. The preliminary examination serves as the first stage of selection for both the Civil Services Examination (CSE) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination.
According to UPSC, a total of 13,343 candidates have successfully qualified for the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026. Additionally, 1,046 candidates have been shortlisted for the Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination 2026. The commission clarified that the candidature of all shortlisted candidates remains provisional and will be subject to verification of eligibility criteria as prescribed in the examination rules.
UPSC CSE Mains Registration Schedule
Candidates who have qualified for the Civil Services Main Examination must complete the mandatory online application process between June 19 and June 28, 2026. During this period, applicants are required to submit the prescribed examination fee of ?200. However, female candidates, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) candidates are exempted from paying the fee as per UPSC norms.
The online application portal will also enable candidates to update information related to scribes, assistive devices, and large-font question papers. Aspirants must also submit their cadre preferences while completing the application process.
UPSC has instructed all qualified candidates to log in to the official portal and verify or update their details before submitting the form. Candidates who fail to complete this mandatory step will not be allowed to appear in the subsequent stages of the examination. Even those with no changes in their details must complete the verification process to ensure the generation of their e-admit cards.
Number of Qualified Candidates Drops in 2026
The number of candidates shortlisted for the Civil Services Main Examination has decreased compared to the previous year. In 2025, UPSC shortlisted 14,161 candidates against 1,087 vacancies. In contrast, 13,343 candidates have qualified this year for 1,016 vacancies notified under the Civil Services Examination 2026.
A more significant decline has been observed in the Indian Forest Service examination. Last year, 2,116 candidates were shortlisted for the IFS Main Examination against 150 vacancies. In 2026, only 1,046 candidates have qualified for 80 notified vacancies.
UPSC has stated that details regarding the online application process for qualified IFS candidates will be announced separately. The commission also informed that the result of one candidate bearing roll number 6300119 has been withheld due to an ongoing legal matter.
Marks and Cut-Offs to Be Released Later
The commission has confirmed that marks obtained by candidates, category-wise cut-off marks, and answer keys of the preliminary examination will be published only after the completion of the entire examination process for both the Civil Services and Indian Forest Service examinations. These details will be made available after the declaration of final results.
Candidates seeking clarification regarding their results may contact the UPSC Facilitation Centre during working hours through the helpline numbers provided by the commission.
