Description
At the Eleventh Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay once again voiced the State's opposition to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical and dental admissions. He argued that the examination system has created challenges for students from rural regions and economically disadvantaged communities seeking admission to medical courses.
Tamil Nadu Raises NEET Concerns Before NITI Aayog
During the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the State government's long-standing concerns regarding NEET and its impact on equal access to medical education. According to the State, the centralized entrance examination has made it more difficult for students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds to compete for medical seats.
The issue was discussed as part of broader deliberations on educational opportunities and admission policies across various States.
Proposal to Use Class XII Marks for State Quota Seats
Tamil Nadu has requested approval to admit students to State quota seats in MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH programmes based exclusively on their Class XII examination performance. Under the proposal, NEET scores would no longer be considered for these seats.
State officials stated that the move is intended to align admissions more closely with school-level academic achievement and provide greater opportunities for students who may face disadvantages in national-level entrance examinations.
Focus on Rural and Economically Weaker Students
The State government maintains that reliance on Class XII marks would offer a more inclusive admission framework, particularly benefiting students from rural districts and lower-income families. Officials argue that a school-based evaluation system could help address disparities in access to medical education.
The proposal was presented before the Governing Council as part of discussions on educational policy, State autonomy, and medical admission regulations across the country.
Tamil Nadu's Development and Youth Empowerment Vision
Apart from education reforms, the Chief Minister outlined Tamil Nadu’s long-term economic growth strategy. He noted that the State, currently one of India's largest economies, aims to achieve a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036 through economic diversification, innovation, and enhanced workforce productivity.
The development agenda focuses on four key groups—youth, women, farmers, and economically weaker sections—while supporting national development objectives.
Youth Skill Development and Employment Initiatives
Under a proposed Youth Skill and Employment Mission, the State plans to provide stipend-supported internships and industry-oriented training to approximately five lakh young people every year.
Tamil Nadu also intends to establish advanced technology skill centres across all districts, offering training in high-demand sectors such as:
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Cybersecurity
Cloud Computing
Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology
Semiconductor Manufacturing
In addition, the State has sought support for strengthening startup incubation centres, venture capital networks, and applied research initiatives to boost innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment generation.
