Description

In a notable policy update, the Punjab government has decided to eliminate the date-of-birth-based tie-breaking system in board examinations, ensuring that students with identical marks receive the same rank. The move comes in response to feedback from students, which was directly conveyed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. State Education Minister Harjot Bains confirmed that the revised policy will treat all students with equal scores equally, removing the previous system that ranked students based on age when marks were tied.

Minister Bains highlighted that this change is part of a broader overhaul of the examination system. Board exams will now focus less on rote memorisation and more on competency-based assessments designed to evaluate a student’s conceptual understanding and analytical skills. This shift is intended to encourage learning that emphasises reasoning and problem-solving rather than simple memorisation.

Addressing concerns about academic integrity, the Education Minister stated that the government will enforce strict measures to prevent cheating and paper leaks, ensuring a secure and transparent examination environment.

Punjab has recently gained recognition as a top-performing state in school education. According to the NITI Aayog Education Quality Report 2026, Punjab outperformed Kerala in several key foundational learning indicators. Minister Bains described this progress as the beginning of “Punjab’s Era” in education, attributing it to systematic reforms, enhanced school infrastructure, and the dedication of teachers, students, and parents. The report highlighted that Class 3 students in Punjab achieved 82% proficiency in language and 78% in mathematics, compared to Kerala’s 75% and 70%, respectively. In Class 9 mathematics, Punjab recorded 52% proficiency, surpassing Kerala’s 45%.
