NEET-UG 2024–25 Controversy: Parliamentary Panel To Review Re-Exam Conduct On June 21

Description

Senior officials from the Union Health and Education Ministries, along with representatives from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the National Medical Commission (NMC), are scheduled to appear before a parliamentary panel on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming NEET-UG re-examination set for June 21.

The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare has summoned the Health Secretary, Higher Education Secretary, and senior officials from the NMC and NTA to provide an update on the matter. This marks the third parliamentary appearance by these officials regarding the ongoing NEET controversy.

Previously, officials from the ministries, NTA, and NMC had addressed the Parliamentary Committee on Education and the Committee on Government Assurances, where they emphasized that their immediate priority was to conduct the NEET-UG re-test in pen-and-paper mode.

The latest discussions follow the cancellation of the NEET-UG exam on May 3, after reports emerged of a paper leak. The incident sparked widespread concern among students and parents, with reports of student suicides further intensifying anxiety regarding the re-examination process. The Parliamentary Committee on Health, which oversees the functioning of the Health Ministry, is expected to question officials on the measures being taken to ensure a transparent and fair examination process.

As per the agenda, the panel will hear inputs from the Health Secretary, Higher Education Secretary, and senior officers of the NMC and NTA on the topic: “Conduct of NEET examinations under the NMC Act, 2019.” This discussion is part of the committee’s broader review of the organizational structure, mandate, and functional efficiency of regulatory bodies under the Health Ministry. The meeting is set to take place at the Parliament House Annexe on June 10.

In parallel, CBI Director Praveen Sood has already briefed another parliamentary panel on the progress of the investigation into the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and the steps being taken to identify those responsible.

Additionally, the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, led by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, is reviewing the issue. The committee has reportedly asked the NTA to clarify its definition of a “paper leak” and confirm whether such incidents have occurred in exams conducted by the agency since 2018.

Following a recent appearance by NTA officials, the panel was informed that no breach of the agency’s examination system had occurred. Officials noted that some questions from a “guess paper” were circulating externally, but emphasized that the NTA’s system remained secure.

The Digvijaya Singh-led panel is also examining the CBSE on-screen marking (OSM) system and has sought written explanations from both CBSE and NTA. Furthermore, the committee has inquired whether the NTA conducted any internal probe into alleged NEET-UG irregularities beyond the ongoing CBI investigation.
