Description
Malaysia has begun enforcing a new rule starting 1 June 2026 that prevents children under the age of 16 from creating or owning social media accounts. The regulation applies to major digital platforms that have more than 8 million users in Malaysia and requires them to implement strict age-verification processes at the time of sign-up.
According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, individuals below 16 years of age will not be permitted to register on the affected platforms. Social media companies are expected to verify users’ ages using official identification documents such as national ID cards or passports.
Platforms Covered and Penalties
The policy includes widely used platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, all of which meet the minimum user base requirement in Malaysia. Non-compliance could result in penalties reaching up to 10 million Malaysian ringgit (around 2.5 million US dollars).
Online Safety Act 2025
This measure is part of Malaysia’s Online Safety Act 2025, which took effect on 1 January 2026 and establishes a legal framework aimed at improving online safety and ensuring platform accountability.
Platforms will be given a transition period to build and integrate age-verification systems, although the government has not yet specified the exact timeframe. Parents will not face any legal consequences if minors manage to circumvent the restrictions.
