On 29 May 2026, doctors at Xijing Hospital of the Chinese Air Force Medical University carried out the world’s first simultaneous transplant of multiple gene-edited pig organs into a human recipient. The procedure involved transplanting two pig kidneys and one pig liver into a 53-year-old brain-dead patient. The donor organs came from pigs with six genetically modified genes designed to reduce the risk of immune rejection.

Understanding Xenotransplantation

Xenotransplantation refers to the transplantation of living cells, tissues, or organs from one species into another. Pigs are considered suitable donors for such research because their organs are similar in size and function to human organs, making them a promising option for addressing organ shortages.

Role of Gene Editing

Gene-editing technology is used in xenotransplantation to make animal organs more compatible with the human body. In this case, scientists modified six genes in the donor pig organs to minimize immune system attacks and improve the chances of successful transplantation.

Key Outcomes of the Procedure

Following the operation, the transplanted pig liver began producing bile within 19 hours, while kidney function indicators returned to normal levels during the first five days. However, signs of immune rejection appeared approximately 36 hours after surgery, as human immune cells started replacing pig cells within the transplanted organs.

The study was led by Xuyong Sun of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University and was published in the medical journal Med on 30 May 2026. During the same operation, the patient’s healthy liver was removed and successfully transplanted into another recipient.

Addressing the Organ Shortage Challenge

Researchers are investigating pig organs as temporary “bridge” support systems for patients awaiting human donor organs. With the global shortage of transplantable human organs continuing to be a major healthcare challenge, advances in xenotransplantation are being explored as a potential solution to expand the availability of life-saving organ replacements.
