The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has opened the application window for the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination 2026. Through this recruitment process, approximately 12,256 vacancies are expected to be filled in various Group B and Group C positions across central government ministries, departments, and other organisations.

The online registration process commenced on May 21 and will remain open until June 22, 2026, up to 11:00 pm. Candidates holding a bachelor's degree from a recognised university are eligible to apply for most of the advertised posts.

The SSC CGL Tier-I examination is scheduled to be conducted in computer-based mode between August and September 2026.

SSC CGL 2026 Tier-I Exam Pattern

The Tier-I examination will be an objective-type online test consisting of 100 questions carrying a total of 200 marks.

The question paper will be divided into four sections:

• General Intelligence and Reasoning

• General Awareness

• Quantitative Aptitude

• English Comprehension

Each section will contain 25 questions worth 50 marks. Candidates will have a total duration of 60 minutes to complete the examination. A sectional time limit of 15 minutes will be allotted for each section.

The examination will also include negative marking, with 0.50 marks deducted for every incorrect response.

General Intelligence and Reasoning

This section evaluates analytical and logical thinking abilities. Candidates can expect questions based on topics such as analogies, classification, coding-decoding, number series, similarities and differences, syllogisms, statement-based reasoning, decision-making, and relationship concepts.

Other important areas include visual memory, Venn diagrams, space visualisation, space orientation, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and social intelligence.

General Awareness

The General Awareness section measures a candidate's knowledge of current events and general understanding of various subjects.

Questions may be asked from current affairs, Indian history, geography, culture, economics, polity, scientific developments, and important events related to India and neighbouring countries.

Regular reading of newspapers, magazines, and current affairs updates can be helpful for preparation.

Quantitative Aptitude

This section focuses on mathematical and numerical skills typically based on concepts studied up to the secondary school level.

Important topics include percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, partnership, mixtures and allegations, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, and data interpretation.

Candidates should also prepare topics involving graphs, triangles, circles, polygons, cylinders, cones, spheres, histograms, bar charts, and pie charts.

English Comprehension

The English Comprehension section assesses language proficiency, grammar, vocabulary, and reading skills.

Questions are likely to cover grammar usage, sentence correction, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and language understanding. This section will be available only in English.
