The Indian Air Force (IAF) entered into three agreements with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay on 27 May 2026 to develop predictive maintenance technologies for the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft fleet. The contracts focus on creating prognostic and prescriptive maintenance systems for military aviation use in India.

Su-30MKI Fighter Aircraft

The Su-30MKI is a twin-engine, multirole combat aircraft used by the Indian Air Force. Originally developed by Russia’s Sukhoi, the aircraft was specially modified for Indian requirements and is produced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under a licence agreement.

Predictive Maintenance Technologies

Predictive maintenance involves the use of sensors, diagnostics, and data analytics to monitor equipment condition and predict potential failures before they happen. Prognostic maintenance estimates the remaining operational life of components, while prescriptive maintenance suggests the most suitable maintenance actions based on data analysis and system modelling.

Indigenous Defence Innovation

The technologies covered under the agreements were developed using indigenous expertise at IIT Bombay. The collaboration is part of India’s broader defence research and development ecosystem involving academic institutions, defence forces, and public sector organisations. The signing ceremony was attended by Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb, Director General (Aircraft) of the IAF, and IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh B Kedare. The initiative aims to improve aircraft availability, operational readiness, and maintenance efficiency of the Su-30MKI fleet.
