Dag Hammarskjold Medal
The Dag Hammarskjöld Medal is awarded posthumously by the United Nations to military, police, and civilian personnel who lose their lives while serving in UN peacekeeping missions. The medal is named after Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, who died in an air crash in 1961 in present-day Zambia.
Indian Peacekeepers in UN Missions
Lance Havildar Harbhajan Singh was deployed with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). Naib Subedar Sujit Kumar Pradhan served under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Major Abhilasha Barak is currently serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
India’s Role in UN Peacekeeping
UN peacekeeping operations began in 1948 with the deployment of military observers to the Middle East. India remains one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, with more than 4,200 personnel currently serving across various operations worldwide. India has also suffered the highest number of casualties among troop-contributing nations.
The Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award honours uniformed personnel who actively promote gender inclusion and engage with women and girls in conflict-affected regions as part of UN peace operations.
