India’s First Women-Led Solar Power Projects Launched in Telangana

India’s first solar power projects managed by women’s self-help groups were inaugurated in Telangana on 27 May 2026. One such 1 MW solar power plant was launched at Venkatapuram village in Errupalem mandal of Khammam district under the Indira Mahila Shakti scheme.

Solar Power and Project Capacity

Solar power refers to electricity produced from sunlight using photovoltaic panels or solar thermal technology. The Khammam solar plant has a capacity of 1 MW and was developed with an investment of around Rs.3 crore. The project is being operated by women’s self-help groups (SHGs), which are community-based organisations involved in savings, credit activities, and livelihood generation.

Women’s Self-Help Groups and Economic Benefits

Women’s self-help groups in India play an important role in microfinance, rural entrepreneurship, and income generation. The Telangana solar project is expected to provide a daily income of approximately Rs.14,000 – Rs.15,000 and monthly earnings of nearly Rs.4.5 lakh – Rs.5 lakh to the participating SHGs. To strengthen women-led enterprises, the Telangana government has also raised the limit of interest-free loans for SHGs from Rs.5 lakh to Rs.10 lakh.

Government Support and Power Procurement

Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are agreements through which electricity generated by power producers is sold to distribution companies under fixed terms and conditions. For this initiative, the government facilitated land allocation, subsidies, and power procurement arrangements with DISCOMs. DISCOMs are state-run electricity distribution companies responsible for supplying electricity to consumers. Telangana has set a goal of achieving 20,000 MW of solar power generation by 2030 and plans to establish similar women-led solar projects across all districts. The initiative combines renewable energy expansion with greater participation of women in the energy sector.
