Description
India and China held the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India–China Border Affairs (WMCC) in Beijing on 27 May 2026. The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Chinese delegation was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
About the WMCC (Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination)
The WMCC is a key diplomatic platform established to manage India–China border affairs. It facilitates consultation, coordination, and communication between the two countries on boundary-related issues and helps maintain stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Key Discussion Areas
The talks in Beijing covered several important aspects, including:
Delimitation of boundary lines
Border management measures
Patrol coordination and incident prevention
Strengthening institutional mechanisms
Enhancing cross-border cooperation
Border Management and Delimitation
Delimitation refers to the formal drawing of boundary lines, while border management includes operational aspects such as patrolling, communication, and preventing tensions along the LAC. Both sides discussed ways to improve these mechanisms to ensure peace and stability in border areas.
Diplomatic and Military Engagements
Both countries agreed to continue regular diplomatic and military-level exchanges through existing channels. India also called for an early meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers, which focuses on technical discussions related to shared river waters.
Special Representatives Meeting
The two sides also agreed to prepare for the next meeting of the Special Representatives mechanism, which is scheduled to be held in China. This mechanism serves as a key institutional framework for broader boundary negotiations between India and China.
