Description
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) organised India’s largest biomedical innovation and technology transfer event in New Delhi, transferring 41 public health technologies to industry partners. The initiative, titled Medical Innovations Patent Mitra: Innovators-to-Industry (I2I) Connect, aims to accelerate healthcare innovation, vaccine development, and commercialization of indigenous medical research.
ICMR Launches Major Biomedical Innovation Platform
The event was held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi and marked one of India’s first structured platforms dedicated entirely to biomedical innovation, technology showcasing, and industry collaboration.
Launched under ICMR’s Medical Innovation Patent Mitra programme, the platform is designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and market-ready healthcare products.
Many promising medical innovations often remain confined to research institutions because of limited commercialization support. The new initiative seeks to address this challenge by connecting researchers directly with industry stakeholders.
41 Public Health Technologies Transferred to Industry
A key highlight of the event was the transfer of 41 public health technologies from ICMR institutes and innovators to industry partners for further development, manufacturing, and commercialization.
The technologies covered several important healthcare sectors, including:
Advanced diagnostic technologies
Vaccines
Medical devices
Biomedical and public health solutions
Among the major technologies transferred were:
Typhoid vaccines
Paratyphoid vaccines
Disease diagnostic technologies
The initiative is expected to improve healthcare access across India while reducing dependence on imported medical technologies.
First-Ever Transfer of KFD and Chandipura Virus Biomaterials
The event also witnessed India’s first-ever transfer of well-characterised inactivated biomaterials related to:
Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) virus
Chandipura virus
This development is considered significant for India’s vaccine research and biomedical manufacturing ecosystem.
Such biomaterials play an important role in advanced scientific research, vaccine development, and public health preparedness. By enabling industry access to these materials, India is strengthening its domestic capabilities in infectious disease innovation.
Importance of the Medical Innovations Patent Mitra Programme
Healthcare innovation frequently faces a major bottleneck after research and patent filing, as many technologies fail to reach hospitals and patients due to weak commercialization pathways.
The Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative aims to overcome these barriers by focusing on:
Protection of biomedical intellectual property
Technology transfer support
Industry–research collaboration
Faster product development timelines
Encouraging startup participation
The programme is intended to create a practical innovation pipeline that takes healthcare ideas from laboratories to patient care.
More Than 100 Healthcare Innovations Showcased
In addition to the technology transfers, the event showcased more than 100 healthcare innovations across areas such as:
Diagnostics
Therapeutics
Medical devices
Public health technologies
Startup-led healthcare innovation
The platform enabled direct interaction among:
Researchers
Startups
Manufacturers
Investors
Healthcare industry leaders
Reports Released During the Event
Two major reports were also released at the event:
Indian Biomedical Patent Landscape Report
This report provides an overview of India’s biomedical patent ecosystem and highlights emerging innovation trends.
Technology Compendium
The compendium offers a consolidated overview of healthcare technologies that are ready for transfer, development, and commercialization.
