Description
The Union Public Service Commission has released the provisional answer key for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) Prelims 2026. This marks the first time UPSC has issued a provisional answer key shortly after the examination.
The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 was conducted on May 24 in two shifts across the country for recruitment to prestigious services including IAS, IPS, and IFS.
More than 8 lakh candidates appeared for the examination this year.
Candidates Can Raise Objections Online
Following the release of the provisional answer key, UPSC has activated a dedicated Question Paper Representation Portal for candidates.
Applicants who wish to challenge any answer can submit objections online along with proper supporting documents, explanations, and evidence for their claims.
The commission stated that subject experts will review all representations before preparing the final answer key.
Major Reform in UPSC Examination Process
The early release of the provisional answer key is being considered one of the biggest procedural reforms introduced by UPSC in recent years.
Previously, candidates depended largely on unofficial answer keys published by coaching institutes after the examination.
The new system is expected to help aspirants evaluate their performance more accurately and begin preparation for the UPSC Mains examination without unnecessary delays.
However, UPSC clarified that the final answer key will still be released only after the entire examination cycle is completed.
UPSC Prelims 2026 Conducted Across 83 Cities
According to UPSC, the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 was conducted at 2,072 venues spread across 83 cities in India.
Out of 8.19 lakh registered candidates, nearly 67 per cent appeared for the examination.
The commission also noted that both registrations and attendance were lower compared to last year, when approximately 9.5 lakh candidates had applied and 5.8 lakh candidates appeared for the exam.
Delhi Recorded Highest Candidate Participation
Delhi witnessed the highest number of candidates appearing for UPSC Prelims 2026.
A total of 70,885 candidates appeared at 144 examination centres in the national capital.
Hyderabad recorded the second-highest participation with 44,209 candidates across 100 venues, followed by Patna where 39,147 candidates appeared at 79 centres.
Kargil in Ladakh reported the lowest participation, with only 98 candidates appearing at a single examination centre.
UPSC Strengthened Security Measures at Exam Centres
UPSC stated that trained invigilators and security personnel were deployed across all examination centres to ensure smooth and fair conduct of the examination.
The commission also deployed mobile signal jammers at all exam venues to prevent unfair practices and maintain examination security.
