Description

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and South Korean Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oh-eul inaugurated the Indian War Memorial at Imjingak Park near Seoul on May 21, 2026.

The memorial was unveiled to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Korean War and honour the contribution of Indian military personnel who served during the conflict.

Indian War Memorial at Imjingak Park

Imjingak Park is an important memorial site located near Seoul in South Korea.

The area previously hosted Hind Nagar in September 1954, which served as a camp for nearly 22,000 prisoners of war before their repatriation after the Korean War.

The newly inaugurated memorial recognises India’s humanitarian and peacekeeping role during the conflict period.

Contribution of 60 Para Field Ambulance

The memorial honours the 60 Para Field Ambulance of the Indian Army and the Custodian Force of India, both associated with the Korean War between 1950 and 1953.

The 60 Para Field Ambulance was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel AG Rangaraj, who was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his service.

Key contributions of the unit include:

  • Deployment of 627 Indian soldiers

  • Treatment of more than 222,000 patients during the war

  • Humanitarian medical assistance in difficult battlefield conditions

The unit became popularly known as the “Maroon Angels” for its exceptional medical service in Korea.

Custodian Force of India

The Custodian Force of India played an important role in supervising prisoners of war and facilitating their repatriation after the Korean War ceasefire.

India’s neutral humanitarian role during the conflict earned international recognition and strengthened diplomatic ties with South Korea.

Ceremony and Bilateral Engagement

During the memorial ceremony, both ministers laid wreaths and paid tribute to Indian military personnel who served during the Korean War.

India and South Korea also signed a memorandum of understanding related to:

  • Honouring Korean War veterans

  • Veterans’ remembrance programmes

  • Bilateral exchanges on military heritage and commemoration

The memorial project was funded by India’s Ministry of Defence.

The inauguration formed part of Rajnath Singh’s four-day official visit to Vietnam and South Korea.
