Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is preparing for a major passenger convenience upgrade with the introduction of its first automated air train system, expected to be operational by 2029. The project, estimated to cost between Rs.3,000 and Rs.4,000 crore, is designed to significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time between terminals and other key airport zones.

What is the Delhi Airport Air Train Project?

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), operated by GMR Airports, has decided to directly fund the long-planned Automated People Mover (APM) project after an earlier proposal under the concessionaire model failed to progress.

Initially, DIAL intended to appoint a private operator to build and run the system, recovering costs through advertising and commercial revenues. However, the plan attracted only one bidder and could not move forward. As a result, DIAL will now finance the project using its internal resources and recover costs through airport tariffs and other revenue streams.

What Areas Will the Air Train Connect?

The automated transit system will provide seamless connectivity across major airport hubs, including:

• Terminal 1

• Terminal 2

• Terminal 3

• Aerocity

• Cargo City

The total route will span approximately 7.7 kilometres, enabling faster and smoother transfers across the airport’s infrastructure.

Free for Transit Passengers, Paid for Others

A key feature of the system is its passenger-friendly access policy. Transit passengers will be able to use the air train free of charge by scanning their boarding passes, allowing easy movement between terminals.

However, non-passengers—such as those visiting the airport to drop off or receive travelers—are expected to pay a fare for using the service.
