Description
India released its first satellite-tagged Ganges soft-shell turtle in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve on 15 May 2026. The release was carried out on Endangered Species Day, observed annually on 15 May. The species involved, Nilssonia gangetica, is a freshwater turtle native to river systems across the Indian subcontinent.
Ganges Soft-Shell Turtle
The Ganges soft-shell turtle belongs to the Trionychidae family, a group of soft-shelled freshwater turtles. It is classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The species is commonly found in rivers, floodplains, and large freshwater wetlands across South Asia.
Satellite Tagging and Monitoring
Satellite tagging involves attaching a transmitter to an animal to collect information about its movement and habitat use. In this project, the transmitter was attached under veterinary supervision before the turtle was released along the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River. The tracking system will help researchers study migration routes, habitat preferences, and seasonal movement patterns.
Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve
Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve spans around 1,302 square kilometres in Assam and is known for its grasslands, wetlands, and riverine ecosystems. The protected area is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and supports wildlife such as the one-horned rhinoceros, Asian elephant, swamp deer, and Bengal tiger.
Conservation Importance
Freshwater turtles are threatened by habitat destruction, pollution, accidental capture in fishing nets, and illegal wildlife trade. Monitoring satellite-tagged individuals helps scientists gather data that can support conservation planning, habitat protection, and long-term species management efforts.
