Description

Uttar Pradesh has intensified river rejuvenation efforts through community-led restoration programmes aimed at improving rural sustainability and ecological resilience. Implemented through the State Mission for Clean Ganga and associated agencies, the initiative focuses on river restoration, pond revival, plantation drives, desilting operations, and removal of encroachments across several districts.

River Rejuvenation in Uttar Pradesh

The “One District-One River” initiative was launched under the Namami Gange mission to revive disappearing rivers in Uttar Pradesh. By 13 May 2026, the campaign had generated around 1.53 lakh human-days of employment and encouraged more than 500 farmers to adopt natural farming practices. Restoration activities carried out under the programme include channel widening and deepening, ghat construction, pond rejuvenation, and plantation work. These measures support water conservation, groundwater recharge, and rural livelihood generation through government schemes.

District-Level Restoration Projects

In Pilibhit district, restoration work on the Gomti River covered a 47-km stretch passing through 16 gram panchayats. The project involved widening and deepening of the river channel, revival of 23 ponds, and construction of ghats.

In Bulandshahr, the Neem River was revived through a 29-km restoration project implemented under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Local farmers participated in removing encroachments, while plantation activities contributed to ecological restoration.

In Azamgarh district, the Tamsa River restoration programme covered an 89-km stretch across 111 gram panchayats under the Namami Gange Programme. The initiative included desilting, waste removal, encroachment clearance, and plantation drives.

Employment and Water Conservation Features

The rejuvenation of the Noon River in Jalaun district was undertaken through MGNREGS. The project generated 5,98,652 person-days of employment, benefited 23,416 farmers, and helped increase groundwater levels by 2.01 metres.

In Rampur district, river restoration efforts included the installation of 300 recharge shafts across 132 ponds along with 15 injection wells. These structures are designed to enhance groundwater recharge and improve water storage capacity in rural regions.

Static GK on River Rejuvenation

River rejuvenation involves activities such as desilting, removal of solid waste, plantation, and restoration of natural water flow. Recharge shafts and injection wells are commonly used to improve groundwater recharge in areas facing water scarcity.
