The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) will introduce India’s first hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in Delhi’s Central Vista area on 15 May 2026. The service will operate between Central Secretariat Metro Station and Seva Teerth Metro Station using two hydrogen fuel cell buses provided by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Technology

The buses operate using hydrogen fuel cell technology, where hydrogen and oxygen combine to generate electricity. The only by-product of this process is water vapour, making it a clean energy transport solution.

Each bus has a seating capacity of 35 passengers and is equipped with GPS tracking systems and CCTV cameras for safety and monitoring.

Route, Timings, and Frequency

The shuttle service will run on weekdays from Monday to Friday, excluding gazetted holidays. It will operate in two time slots:

• 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM

• 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM

Buses will run at a frequency of every 30 minutes and will operate in clockwise and anti-clockwise loops. The route will cover major Central Vista landmarks, including Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, and India Gate.

Fare System and Payment Options

The fare structure is stage-based, with tickets priced at Rs 10 and Rs 15 depending on distance travelled. Passengers can pay using the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), Unified Payments Interface (UPI), or cash.

Institutional Roles and Collaboration

The project is a joint initiative involving the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

• DMRC will manage bus operations, ticketing, conductors, and passenger services.

• IOCL will provide drivers and supply hydrogen fuel for the buses.

This collaboration reflects India’s growing focus on clean energy transport solutions.
