Kumaran took charge as India’s High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom on 13 May 2026 and officially assumed responsibilities in London on 14 May 2026. He presented his credentials to Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps, Scott Furssedonn-Wood, and will formally begin his full tenure after submitting his credentials to King Charles III.

Indian Foreign Service Background

P. Kumaran is a 1992-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service. Prior to this appointment, he served as Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, where he was responsible for managing India’s diplomatic engagements and foreign policy in key regions.

Diplomatic Career Profile

Over the course of his career, Kumaran has held several important postings. He served as India’s Ambassador to Qatar from 2016 to 2020 and later as High Commissioner to Singapore from 2020 to 2023. In diplomatic terms, High Commissioners represent India in Commonwealth countries, while Ambassadors are appointed to non-Commonwealth nations.
