Description
On 13 May 2026, the Centre announced the Mizoram Ginger Mission with an overall allocation of Rs.189.79 crore. The initiative, officially titled the Mizoram Ginger Unique Selling Proposition (USP) – Sustainable Cultivation & Value Chain Development Project, is designed to enhance the production and market value of ginger in the state.
GI-Tagged Mizoram Ginger and Export Focus
Mizo Ginger, which carries Geographical Indication (GI) certification, is a key focus of the mission. The programme aims to promote high-quality, pharma-grade ginger for global export markets.
Key Areas of the Project and Funding Support
The mission covers multiple areas including sustainable farming practices, quality assurance systems, food safety measures, mechanisation of agriculture, solar-powered initiatives, post-harvest handling, and processing facilities. Additionally, the Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region sanctioned ?30.13 crore under the North Eastern Council’s Focused Development Component to strengthen post-harvest infrastructure and processing units.
Ginger Cultivation in Mizoram
Mizoram was recognised as the “Ginger Capital of India” by NITI Aayog in 2025, reflecting its significant production capacity. Ginger farming in the state is also supported through the Bana Kaih scheme, which provides procurement and farmer assistance.
Procurement Performance and Market Concerns
In 2025, the state government spent Rs.141.16 crore on ginger procurement, while sales revenue stood at only Rs.12.78 crore. Reports also indicated that out of 24,298 quintals procured under the Bana Kaih scheme, around 18,600 quintals remained unsold and stored in Food Corporation of India godowns at Sairang as of April 2025.
Administrative Review and Launch
Authorities detected and corrected cases where non-local ginger was being falsely passed off as local produce under the support price system, ensuring corrective action before fund release in February 2026. The mission was officially launched through a virtual event led by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
