Description
Two days after announcing the Class 12 board exam results, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released a comprehensive circular on Friday introducing a revised post-result grievance and re-evaluation system under its newly implemented On-Screen Marking (OSM) process.
The announcement follows concerns raised by teachers and schools regarding technical difficulties during the digital evaluation process. Evaluators had reported issues such as blurred scanned answer sheets, server interruptions, and disruptions while assessing answer scripts online.
Under the On-Screen Marking system introduced for the 2026 Class 12 board examinations, students’ answer sheets were scanned and uploaded to a digital platform, allowing examiners to evaluate them remotely. In the circular issued by Controller of Examinations Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE defended the digital system and highlighted several advantages, including reduced manual handling, prevention of totalling and uploading mistakes, improved transparency, and better scalability.
CBSE Highlights Benefits of OSM System
According to the Board, the new system ensures that answers are checked according to the official marking scheme and helps avoid errors in totalling and mark uploads. CBSE also stated that evaluators were provided with detailed instructions and training sessions before the nationwide implementation of the digital evaluation method.
Despite these claims, several teachers involved in the evaluation process had previously pointed out challenges while checking scanned answer books. Some examiners stated that certain scanned copies were unclear and required constant zooming. Others reported server crashes, unsaved evaluations, and disappearance of answer scripts from the system after checking.
New Two-Step Post-Result Process
In response to these concerns, CBSE has introduced a two-stage process for students seeking clarification or review of their marks.
In the first stage, students can obtain scanned copies of their evaluated answer sheets online. In the second stage, candidates may apply either for verification of issues noticed in the answer books or for re-evaluation of specific answers.
CBSE has scheduled the application process for obtaining scanned copies from May 19 to May 22. Students will need to pay Rs 700 per subject. Applications for verification of issues and re-evaluation will be accepted between May 26 and May 29.
The fee for verification of issues has been fixed at Rs 500 per answer book, while re-evaluation requests will cost Rs 100 per question.
Students Advised to Check Scanned Copies Carefully
In the FAQ section accompanying the circular, CBSE advised students to ensure that their answer sheets have been scanned properly after receiving the copies. Candidates have also been instructed to check whether all pages, supplementary sheets, and graphs are clearly visible.
The Board further recommended that students compare their responses with the official marking schemes available on the CBSE website before applying for re-evaluation. Applications must clearly mention the questions being challenged along with valid reasons.
CBSE clarified that marks may either increase or decrease after re-evaluation and that the revised result will be considered final. Students whose marks are changed after re-evaluation will be required to surrender their original mark sheet and certificate before a revised document is issued.
The Board had declared the Class 12 results on Wednesday, recording an overall pass percentage of 85.20 percent. This marks a drop compared to 88.39 percent in 2025 and 87.98 percent in 2024.
