Description

A new Ebola outbreak was officially confirmed on 15 May 2026 in Ituri Province. The outbreak was confirmed by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention after preliminary laboratory testing detected the Ebola virus in multiple samples.

According to health authorities, the outbreak has raised concerns because of the increasing number of suspected infections and deaths reported in the affected region.

What is Ebola Virus Disease?

Ebola Virus Disease is a serious and often fatal viral illness caused by viruses belonging to the genus Ebolavirus under the family Filoviridae.

The disease was first identified in 1976 in:

  • Democratic Republic of Congo

  • Sudan

Since then, multiple outbreaks have occurred across Central and West Africa.

Current Situation in Ituri Province

As of 15 May 2026:

  • 246 suspected Ebola cases were reported

  • 65 deaths had been recorded

The majority of suspected cases and fatalities were reported from:

  • Mongwalu health zone

  • Rwampara health zone

Additional suspected cases were also identified in Bunia, where further laboratory confirmation is underway.

Laboratory Findings and Virus Strain

Preliminary testing by the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale found Ebola virus presence in 13 out of 20 collected samples.

Health experts indicated that the outbreak may involve a non-Zaire strain of the Ebola virus, although detailed genetic sequencing and confirmation are still in progress.

Scientists are using advanced laboratory techniques to identify:

  • Exact virus strain

  • Mutation patterns

  • Transmission characteristics

  • Potential outbreak severity

Emergency Response and International Coordination

In response to the outbreak, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention convened an urgent high-level coordination meeting involving health officials from:

  • Democratic Republic of Congo

  • Uganda

  • South Sudan

The meeting focused on:

  • Cross-border surveillance

  • Emergency preparedness

  • Contact tracing

  • Laboratory support

  • Public health coordination

Authorities are also monitoring neighbouring regions to prevent wider transmission.

How Ebola Spreads

Ebola virus disease spreads through:

  • Direct contact with infected blood

  • Contact with body fluids

  • Exposure to contaminated materials

  • Contact with infected animals

Healthcare workers and caregivers are considered particularly vulnerable during outbreaks if proper protective measures are not followed.

Symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease

Common symptoms include:

  • High fever

  • Severe weakness

  • Muscle pain

  • Headache

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • Internal and external bleeding in severe cases

Early diagnosis and supportive medical care are important for improving survival rates.

Ebola and the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced several Ebola outbreaks since the disease was first identified in 1976.

The country’s dense forests, remote settlements, and challenges in healthcare infrastructure have often complicated outbreak management and containment efforts.

Ituri Province is located in the north-eastern region of the country and has previously faced public health emergencies linked to infectious diseases and humanitarian challenges.
