South Coast Railway Zone Begins Operations in Visakhapatnam

The South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone is set to commence operations on 1 June 2026, with its headquarters located in Visakhapatnam. The Ministry of Railways officially announced the formation of the zone through a gazette notification issued on 4 May 2026. With this development, SCoR becomes the 18th railway zone of Indian Railways.

Structure of the South Coast Railway Zone

The newly formed South Coast Railway zone will comprise the existing Guntakal, Guntur, and Vijayawada divisions, which were earlier part of the South Central Railway. In addition, a new Visakhapatnam division has been created under the zone.

As part of the restructuring, the former Waltair division was reorganized. Around 696 km of the route network was converted into the Rayagada division under the East Coast Railway, while the remaining 463 km now forms the Visakhapatnam division under South Coast Railway.

Legal and Administrative Background

The establishment of the South Coast Railway zone is connected to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, which includes provisions related to railway administration and infrastructure development in the state.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the new zone would become operational from 1 June 2026. Earlier, in January 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the zonal headquarters in Visakhapatnam.

Changes in Divisions and Railway Network

As part of the reorganization process, seven railway stations located in the Palasa–Ichchapuram section were shifted from the Khurda Division of East Coast Railway to the newly established Visakhapatnam division.

The South Coast Railway zone will oversee railway administration across several parts of Andhra Pradesh and nearby operational corridors. In the Indian Railways system, railway zones serve as the highest administrative units. Each zone is headed by a General Manager and is further divided into divisions responsible for train operations, infrastructure maintenance, passenger services, and overall railway management within their respective regions.
