India-Oman CEPA to Come Into Force from June 1

India and Oman have concluded the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is scheduled to take effect from 1 June 2026. The agreement was originally signed in December 2025, and Oman formally approved it through a Royal Decree in February 2026.

What is a Free Trade Agreement?

A Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is an arrangement between two or more countries aimed at reducing or eliminating customs duties on selected goods and services. A CEPA is a more comprehensive trade framework that not only covers trade in goods and services but also includes investment, economic collaboration, and other areas of partnership.

Main Features of the India-Oman CEPA

Under the agreement, India will receive duty-free market access for nearly 98% of its exports to Oman. Major export sectors expected to benefit include textiles, agriculture, and leather products. In return, India will lower import duties on several Omani goods, including dates, marble, and petrochemical products.

India-Oman Trade Ties

Trade between India and Oman reached around US$10.61 billion during FY2024-25. On 12 May 2026, officials from both countries met in New Delhi to discuss further economic cooperation and measures to improve trade facilitation.
