Description
A study published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society in May 2026 has suggested the possible existence of an ancient hidden dwarf galaxy called Loki inside the Milky Way. The conclusion is based on the chemical composition and orbital behaviour of 20 metal-poor stars located within 2 kiloparsecs of the Sun.
Role of Dwarf Galaxies in Galactic Formation
A dwarf galaxy is a relatively small galaxy containing fewer stars and much less mass compared to large galaxies such as the Milky Way. According to the theory of hierarchical galaxy formation, large galaxies grow over time by merging with smaller galaxies. The Milky Way is believed to have absorbed several dwarf galaxies in the past, including Gaia-Enceladus, Sequoia, Thamnos, and Kraken. Astronomers study these merger remnants using stellar chemistry, orbital motion, and the ages of stars.
Chemical and Orbital Clues
The 20 stars associated with Loki exhibit mixed orbital patterns, with 11 stars moving in prograde orbits and 9 moving in retrograde orbits. Prograde stars travel in the same direction as the Milky Way’s rotation, while retrograde stars move in the opposite direction. The stars also contain chemical signatures linked to supernova explosions and neutron star mergers. Researchers noted the absence of white dwarf activity, which suggests that the original system may have existed only for a short period before merging with the Milky Way.
Spectroscopy and Observational Analysis
The researchers used high-resolution ESPaDOnS spectroscopy to examine 23 chemical elements within the stars. Spectroscopy helps astronomers analyse the light emitted by celestial objects to determine their composition, temperature, movement, and other physical characteristics. Similar elemental patterns among multiple stars indicate that they likely originated from the same ancient system. Metal-poor stars are considered extremely old because they contain very small amounts of elements heavier than helium.
If future observations confirm the discovery, Loki would become another known dwarf galaxy absorbed by the Milky Way, offering new insights into the galaxy’s merger history and the evolution of the early universe.
