Rolls-Royce Plans India Expansion in Fighter Jets, Nuclear Energy

Rolls-Royce has announced plans to strengthen its operations in India with a focus on defence, civil aviation, and energy sectors. The company’s India roadmap includes military engine development, localised manufacturing, and opportunities in nuclear energy.

Focus on Military Engine Development

Rolls-Royce is expanding its military engine programme in India and is exploring the joint development of an advanced combat aircraft engine. The proposed engine is in the 120 kN thrust category, commonly used in modern fighter jets. The company has also offered complete technology transfer along with intellectual property ownership for India as part of the proposal.

Defence Manufacturing and AMCA Support

The company’s expansion strategy includes increasing localisation of engine manufacturing for the Indian Army, Navy, and Coast Guard. The proposed combat jet engine partnership is expected to support India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, the country’s indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet project. Rolls-Royce also plans to significantly expand its sourcing and supply chain network within India.

Leadership Engagement and Growth Plans

In February 2026, Rolls-Royce Chief Executive Officer Tufan Erginbilgic met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss the company’s role in supporting India’s Viksit Bharat vision and its future investment plans.

In May 2026, Rolls-Royce appointed Sashi Mukundan to lead its expansion initiatives in defence, aviation, and nuclear energy sectors in India. The company expects the workforce supported by its operations in India to grow to nearly 10,000 people. It also aims to increase its supply chain footprint in the country by tenfold. Alongside defence and aviation, Rolls-Royce plans to provide power solutions for critical infrastructure, industrial operations, and nuclear energy applications in India.
