Description

The West Bengal government announced the proposed Annapurna Bhandar scheme on 11 May 2026 following the first cabinet meeting of the newly formed BJP government. The initiative is aimed at providing financial assistance to eligible women across the state and is expected to be launched from 1 June 2026.

About the Annapurna Bhandar Scheme

Annapurna Bhandar is a proposed welfare programme designed to support women in West Bengal through direct financial assistance. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries are likely to receive Rs 3,000 per month through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their bank accounts. The programme is being presented as a replacement or an enhanced version of the earlier Lakshmir Bhandar scheme.

Lakshmir Bhandar Scheme

Lakshmir Bhandar was a women-focused social welfare scheme implemented in West Bengal. Under the programme, women from the general category received Rs 1,500 per month, while beneficiaries belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities received Rs 1,700 per month. The newly proposed Annapurna Bhandar scheme continues the state’s policy focus on direct cash assistance for women.

Current Status and Rollout

As of 11 May 2026, the state government had announced the scheme, but detailed guidelines and the official notification regarding the application process had not yet been released. The proposed launch date for the scheme has been set for 1 June 2026.
