Description
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that NEET (UG) 2026, held on May 3, 2026, has been cancelled. The examination, which was attempted by approximately 24 lakh candidates, will be conducted again on fresh dates to be announced later.
The decision follows a detailed review of materials obtained by the NTA in coordination with central agencies and findings reported by law enforcement authorities. Investigations revealed that certain question sets were circulated prior to the exam in multiple states, including Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. Analysis indicated that over 100 biology and chemistry questions from a question bank of more than 400 questions bore significant similarity to the actual exam paper.
Authorities conducted searches and inquiries in several locations, including Sikar and Dehradun, scrutinizing coaching centers and intermediaries involved in circulating the material. Additionally, similar materials, such as test-series papers and videos, were reported from a coaching institute in Latur, Maharashtra, although formal investigations there had not commenced at the time of reporting.
On May 8, 2026, the NTA forwarded all relevant findings to central agencies for independent verification and further action to safeguard the integrity of the national examination. After reviewing the cumulative evidence, the agency determined that the examination could not continue without compromising fairness and public trust.
The Government of India has also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a comprehensive probe into the matter. The NTA has pledged full cooperation, providing all necessary records and assistance to the investigative authorities.
The agency acknowledged that re-conducting the exam will cause inconvenience to candidates and their families but emphasized that maintaining institutional credibility and public confidence is paramount.
Candidates’ registration details, examination-centre preferences, and other submitted data for May 2026 will remain valid for the re-conducted exam. No fresh registration or additional fees will be required. Examination fees already paid will be refunded, and the re-exam will be organized using the NTA’s internal resources.
Revised examination dates and admit card issuance schedules will be communicated exclusively through official NTA channels. Candidates and parents are advised to rely solely on official updates and avoid unverified information circulating on social media.
