Description
India has permitted restricted wheat exports in 2026 after imposing a ban on 13 May 2022. The government has cautiously reopened exports through controlled quotas while maintaining its overall “prohibited” export status.
Approval of Wheat and Wheat Product Exports
On 13 February 2026, the government approved the export of 2.5 million tonnes of wheat along with 0.5 million tonnes of wheat-based products. Later, on 20 April 2026, an additional 2.5 lakh tonnes of wheat exports were permitted.
These exports are being routed through official channels and government-to-government arrangements to ensure regulatory control.
Wheat Export Policy and Restrictions
Although India’s wheat export policy continues to remain under the “prohibited” category, selective relaxations have been introduced. These limited permissions allow regulated exports depending on domestic supply conditions.
The export ban imposed in May 2022 was driven by concerns over food security, reduced production, and rising inflation in the domestic market.
Production and Domestic Stock Situation
For the 2025–26 crop year, India’s wheat production is projected to reach a record 120.2 million tonnes. This growth is attributed to expanded cultivation area and favourable weather conditions.
As of 1 April 2026, wheat stocks in the central pool of the Food Corporation of India are estimated at around 18.2 lakh tonnes, reflecting the country’s domestic availability position.
Export Volumes and Global Demand
So far, the total approved wheat export volume stands at 5 lakh tonnes, while wheat product exports are capped at 1 lakh tonnes.
Countries including Egypt, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Bangladesh have expressed interest in importing Indian wheat following the partial easing of restrictions.
Conclusion
India’s limited reopening of wheat exports reflects a balanced approach between supporting international demand and ensuring domestic food security. Export decisions continue to depend on stock levels, market prices, and overall supply stability.
