Description
On 4 May 2026, the United States launched Project Freedom, a naval mission aimed at escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and restoring freedom of navigation. The operation, led by US Central Command (CENTCOM), involves guided-missile destroyers, over 100 air and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned systems, and around 15,000 military personnel.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Oman and Iran, connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints, playing a crucial role in global oil transportation and commercial shipping routes.
Objectives of Project Freedom
The primary goal of Project Freedom is to escort approximately 800 commercial vessels stranded due to a dual blockade in the region. US President Donald Trump announced the initiative on 3 May 2026, describing it as a humanitarian effort intended to protect neutral ships and their crews.
Escalating Regional Tensions
The situation follows heightened tensions after Iran reportedly blocked the Strait of Hormuz on 28 February 2026 following US and Israeli airstrikes. Subsequently, the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports on 13 April 2026 after peace talks in Islamabad failed.
Maritime Freedom Construct Initiative
Alongside the operation, the United States introduced the Maritime Freedom Construct, a coordination framework involving the Department of State and the Department of War. It focuses on improving maritime security, intelligence sharing, and operational coordination.
Iran’s Response and Warnings
Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Commission, warned that any US intervention in the Strait of Hormuz would be viewed as a violation of the ceasefire agreement, further escalating regional tensions.
