Description
India has made a significant advancement in highway infrastructure by introducing its first barrier-free toll collection system on the Delhi–Mumbai National Highway (NH-48). The system has been implemented at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section in Gujarat, signalling a move toward smoother and more technology-driven toll operations.
What is the MLFF Tolling System?
The newly introduced Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system enables vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping. It works using technologies like Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag, which automatically detect vehicles and deduct toll charges. This removes the need for physical toll barriers and manual booths, ensuring uninterrupted traffic movement.
Key Benefits of Barrier-Free Tolling
The MLFF system is expected to cut travel time by removing queues at toll plazas. It also reduces fuel usage and emissions since vehicles do not need to slow down or idle. With minimal human involvement, the system improves efficiency, reduces delays, and enhances the overall travel experience for both commuters and freight transporters.
Enforcement and Payment Mechanism
Toll payments under this system are automatically processed via FASTag-linked accounts or registered vehicle details. If violations occur, such as missing or inactive FASTag, e-notices are issued by authorities. Continued non-compliance may lead to penalties, including FASTag suspension and restrictions on services like vehicle fitness certification or ownership transfers.
Future Roadmap and Policy Direction
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to roll out barrier-free tolling across major highways by 2029. This approach replaces earlier satellite-based toll proposals due to concerns over privacy and security. The initiative supports India’s broader goals of digital governance, improved logistics efficiency, and greater ease of travel and business operations.
