Description
Indian conservationist Parveen Shaikh has been awarded the prestigious Whitley Award 2026 for her dedicated efforts to protect the endangered Indian skimmer through a community-driven conservation approach. This recognition underscores the rising significance of grassroots initiatives in preserving biodiversity, particularly within India’s river ecosystems.
Recognition for Community-Based Efforts
The Whitley Award—often called the “Green Oscars”—is presented by a UK-based charity to individuals demonstrating exceptional contributions to wildlife conservation. Shaikh’s work with the Bombay Natural History Society has been acknowledged for effectively involving local communities, creating a sustainable and inclusive model for species protection.
Indian Skimmer: A Threatened River Bird
The Indian skimmer is distinguished by its bright orange bill and unique feeding style, skimming the water surface to catch fish. India is home to more than 90% of the global population, estimated at roughly 3,000 birds. However, the species is highly vulnerable as it nests on sandbars and mid-river islands, which are increasingly threatened by habitat disturbance, changing river flows, and human interference.
Success of the ‘Guardians of the Skimmer’ Programme
Shaikh’s conservation initiative along the Chambal River has achieved notable success. The skimmer population in the region has grown from around 400 in 2017 to nearly 1,000 by 2025. Improved nest survival rates have been a key outcome, driven by consistent monitoring and protection efforts led by local communities, who now actively safeguard breeding sites.
Expansion Plans to Prayagraj
With support from the award funding, the initiative is set to expand to Prayagraj, at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. This region faces challenges such as heavy boat traffic, fishing pressure, and pollution. The project will introduce trained local guardians, predator-proofing strategies, and GPS-based nest tracking, aiming to replicate the Chambal model and secure long-term conservation of the species.
