Description
Amul is one of India’s most trusted and beloved food brands. From butter and milk to cheese and ice cream, its products are part of almost every household. The iconic yellow butter pack featuring the famous “Amul girl” is instantly recognizable. But a common question still arises—who actually owns Amul?
The answer is both unique and inspiring.
What Does Amul Mean?
The name Amul stands for Anand Milk Union Limited, originating from Anand, a town in Gujarat where the brand was founded. The word also comes from the Sanskrit term “Amulya,” meaning priceless, which reflects the brand’s value in people’s lives.
How Amul Began
Amul was established on 14 December 1946. During that time, dairy farmers in Gujarat were exploited by middlemen who offered very low prices for milk.
To fight this injustice, farmer leader Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, along with guidance from Verghese Kurien and support from leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai, brought farmers together to form a cooperative.
This model allowed farmers to sell milk directly, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring fair income.
Role in the White Revolution
Amul played a major role in India’s White Revolution, which transformed the country into one of the world’s largest milk producers. It significantly improved rural livelihoods and empowered millions of dairy farmers across India.
So, Who Owns Amul?
The most interesting fact is that Amul does not have a single owner.
It is owned by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which is a collective of millions of dairy farmers.
In simple terms, Amul belongs to approximately 3.6 million farmers. Every farmer who supplies milk becomes a part-owner of the cooperative. This makes Amul truly a people-owned brand.
Who Manages Amul Today?
Today, Amul is professionally managed under GCMMF. The current Managing Director is Jayen Mehta.
The organization works with thousands of village cooperatives and handles massive volumes of milk production and distribution across the country.
Why Amul is Unique
Amul is more than just a brand—it is a successful cooperative movement. It has empowered farmers, strengthened rural economies, and ensured consumers receive high-quality dairy products at fair prices.
What makes Amul truly special is its ownership structure: it belongs not to a single business tycoon, but to millions of ordinary farmers across India.
