Description
NITI Aayog has unveiled a two-phase roadmap titled ‘DPI@2047: The Roadmap to Prosperity’, aimed at transforming India into a $30 trillion economy by 2047.
The strategy focuses on leveraging Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to accelerate economic growth, promote innovation, and ensure large-scale inclusion. Through this initiative, India is preparing for a massive economic transformation by strengthening digital systems that support productivity across multiple sectors.
The vision also targets a per capita income of $18,000, signaling a major step toward broad-based economic empowerment.
DPI 2.0 and DPI 3.0: Understanding the Two Phases
DPI 2.0 (2025–2035): Building Capable Citizens
The first phase, DPI 2.0, focuses on strengthening the foundation of digital empowerment. Its primary objective is to create a broad base of skilled and capable citizens who can actively participate in the digital economy.
This phase aims to:
Expand access to digital tools and services
Improve public service delivery through digital platforms
Ensure that individuals, especially from lower- and middle-income groups, benefit from emerging economic opportunities
By enhancing digital literacy and accessibility, DPI 2.0 seeks to prepare citizens for future technological and economic demands.
DPI 3.0 (2035–2047): Driving Innovation and Prosperity
The second phase, DPI 3.0, focuses on unlocking long-term prosperity through innovation and high-value economic growth.
This stage envisions a system where:
Local businesses and communities actively participate in global value chains
Grassroots innovation becomes a key driver of economic development
Growth shifts from incremental progress to productivity-driven transformation
DPI 3.0 aims to position India as a global leader in digital innovation and economic productivity.
From Aadhaar to UPI: The Foundation of DPI 1.0
India’s digital journey began with DPI 1.0, which laid the groundwork for the country’s digital transformation. Platforms such as Aadhaar and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) revolutionized digital identity and payment systems nationwide.
These systems have enabled:
Digital identity access for more than 1.3 billion people
Seamless and instant financial transactions
Rapid expansion of financial inclusion across the country
Building on this success, the new roadmap aims to extend digital infrastructure into deeper economic sectors.
Focus on MSMEs, Agriculture, and Job Creation
The roadmap highlights key sectoral transformations that will drive inclusive growth.
For Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the strategy aims to:
Expand market access through digital platforms
Connect businesses with local talent using cost-effective job-matching systems
In the agriculture sector, the focus includes:
Increasing farmers’ incomes through digital advisory services
Improving market linkages
Enabling participation in global agricultural value chains
These measures are expected to address major challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and food security.
Strengthening Education and Healthcare Systems
Human development is a major pillar of the DPI@2047 roadmap.
Key initiatives include:
Promoting learner-centric education in local languages
Expanding access to digital learning platforms
Strengthening universal healthcare coverage through digital health systems
These reforms aim to improve access to quality education and healthcare across the country.
The Bigger Vision: Viksit Bharat 2047
The roadmap aligns with India’s broader national goal of achieving ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047, marking 100 years of independence.
The vision emphasizes coordinated efforts among government institutions, industry leaders, academic bodies, and civil society organizations.
Key pillars supporting this transformation include:
Trust and transparency
Data security
Interoperability across digital systems
Continuous innovation
Together, these elements are expected to drive India toward sustainable and inclusive economic growth by 2047.
