Description

The 17th annual Old Seed Festival, held in Killoguda village in the Araku region of Andhra Pradesh, emphasised the importance of protecting indigenous seed varieties and promoting natural farming methods. Organised by the Sanjeevini organisation, the festival brought together Adivasi farmers, agricultural researchers, environmentalists, and members of civil society to celebrate traditional farming practices and tribal biodiversity.

Indigenous Seeds Displayed by Farmers

Farmers from Araku, Rampachodavaram, the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, and Koraput in Odisha participated in the festival, showcasing a rich collection of traditional seeds. The exhibits included millets, pulses, tubers, and several native crop varieties that are well suited to tribal agricultural systems.

The festival began with a traditional village procession in which participants carried preserved seed varieties, symbolising the need to safeguard native crops. Cultural performances, including traditional drumming and Dhimsa dances, added to the festive atmosphere and highlighted the cultural roots of indigenous farming.

Emphasis on Tuber Seed Conservation

One of the key highlights of the event was the display of 80 varieties of tuber seeds by farmers from Gondivalasa village in Dumbriguda mandal. This exhibition attracted significant attention from visitors as well as agricultural experts.

Farmers demonstrated their techniques for seed preservation and cultivation, while also explaining the resilience of indigenous crops to changing climate conditions. Traditional tuber varieties are considered particularly valuable because they require minimal external inputs and adapt well to local environmental conditions.

Honouring Farmers and Promoting Natural Farming

T. Baburao Naidu, Executive Director of the Rythu Sadhikara Samstha, visited the exhibition stalls and interacted with farmers to understand seed quality and cultivation practices. In the seed exhibition competition, Sukri from Gondivalasa, Manikanta from Tamil Nadu, and Pratik Mori from Maharashtra were recognised for their efforts and contributions.

Representatives from multiple organisations and research institutions commended the Sanjeevini organisation for its 17 years of dedicated work in preserving indigenous seeds and encouraging sustainable farming practices in tribal regions. Participants urged authorities to provide stronger institutional support and officially recognise organic farming clusters in the Araku region.

They stressed that tribal farming systems help maintain ecological balance while supporting rural livelihoods. Experts also highlighted that encouraging indigenous agricultural methods can reduce reliance on chemical-based farming and promote sustainable rural development. Overall, the festival served as both a cultural celebration and a reminder of the importance of safeguarding traditional agricultural knowledge in tribal communities.
