Description
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has added two new subjects—Statistics and Forestry—to the National Testing Agency (NTA)-conducted National Eligibility Test (NET), starting from the June 2026 session. This decision expands the range of disciplines available for candidates appearing in the exam.
The NET is conducted twice a year, in June and December, to determine eligibility for Assistant Professor posts and Junior Research Fellowship in Indian colleges and universities. The inclusion of these new subjects was approved during the Commission’s 597th meeting, based on recommendations from an expert committee.
Statistics added to UGC NET
Statistics has now been officially included as a new subject in the NET examination. This addition is aimed at supporting candidates specialising in statistical science and related academic areas.
The syllabus for Statistics has already been made available on the official UGC NET website. Candidates appearing in the June 2026 session can now access the updated syllabus and exam guidelines online. This update is expected to better align the exam structure with current academic and research needs.
Forestry introduced in NET exam
In another update, Forestry has also been added as a new subject in the NET list. This subject will also be applicable from the June 2026 cycle.
The Forestry syllabus has been uploaded on the official portal, allowing candidates to prepare according to the prescribed topics. The subject is particularly relevant for students in environmental science, forest management, and allied fields.
Approval and official confirmation
Both subjects were introduced following recommendations from an expert committee and were approved during the Commission’s 597th meeting. The changes are part of efforts to broaden the scope of the eligibility test.
The official notification was issued by Prof. Shyama Rath, Secretary of the Commission, from the UGC office in New Delhi.
Candidates planning to appear for NET June 2026 are advised to check the official website for the latest syllabus updates and exam-related instructions.
