Description
India’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $2.36 billion, reaching $703.31 billion for the week ending April 17, 2026, according to the latest figures released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The growth was mainly supported by stronger foreign currency assets and continued stability in the country’s external sector.
Continued Improvement in Forex Reserves
The recent increase follows an earlier rise of $3.825 billion recorded in the week ending April 10, when reserves stood at $700.946 billion. This steady upward trend indicates a gradual strengthening of India’s reserve position after short-term declines linked to global economic uncertainties.
Foreign Currency Assets Drive the Growth
Foreign Currency Assets (FCA), which form the largest share of India’s forex reserves, rose by $1.48 billion to reach $557.46 billion. FCA represents foreign currencies held by the RBI, and its value is affected by fluctuations in major international currencies such as the US dollar, euro, and yen.
Earlier Dip Linked to Global Tensions
India’s forex reserves had earlier reached a record high of $728.494 billion in February 2026. However, reserves declined in subsequent weeks due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which placed pressure on the Indian rupee. To stabilise the currency, the RBI intervened in the foreign exchange market by selling dollars.
Role of Forex Reserves in Economic Stability
Robust foreign exchange reserves serve as a financial safety net during periods of global volatility. They help ensure uninterrupted international trade payments, boost investor confidence, and enable the RBI to stabilise the rupee when markets fluctuate. Strong reserves therefore play a key role in maintaining India’s overall economic stability and resilience.
